So I've been running my TD4 auto for 11 years now. I bought it with circa 70k on the clock. It was smokey when I bought it and I eventually had to have the injectors changed. It's always remained smokey though throughout my entire ownership, but only at higher revs under load, and there is also the ever present but intermittent 2k missfire (which has been less noticeable in the last year or two). I deactivated the egr not long after I bought it, and did the BMW cyclone mod.

Now, skip forward to this month and I've been running around in a BMW 1 Series 118d which has the same M47 engine. There is absolutely no smoke, and no 2k missfire. It'll obviously have the cyclone breather, and I've not looked at the EGR set up, but it'll be factory BMW. Both cars are 2005, and both have done above 150k miles. I'm wondering what the difference might be? Discuss.

Computer management probably better in the BMW than Landrovers version. Remember the reports, of Germans cars avoiding the emissions test on MOT because it tricked the computer.

I’d agree - it’s got to be something in the ECU setups. If they are identical engines, then it can only be the management of said engines that causes any differences in standard running.

I guess the misfire comparison is a bit hit and miss (good pun, huh?!). Mine is 2004, just shy of 140k, but has no 2k misfire. It also has the breather mod, blanked egr, and no noticeable smoke after the first 5 seconds or so.

… unless yours has another yet unknown issue

Are they the same? Do they have the same HP pump, injectors, intercooler, hoses etc.

They wouldn't have smoked when they were new. If it smokes now, it won't be the ECU, cos that is exactly the same (unless its outputting wrong voltages or ought I suppose), but what has worn/clogged up or what ever.

Funny you should ask this question as a while back I was thinking, get a scrap BMW, swap it all with loom and ECUs and mechanical bits off Freelander and see what happens.

Having just got a low mileage TD4 Sport, all my others have been to the moon and back mileage wise!! It is a fab drive. Quiet, responsive, no shudders on hills, no misfire. So it can be done.

Be interesting to fit a tired vehicle with all new sensors and MAF, new injectors and see what you have got!!

It would certainly be an interesting experiment - not sure how the measurements would work, as some of it at least would be based on ‘opinion’ rather than data.
It would need a benchmark to work from, and as no m47 engine is ‘new’, what would be the standard?

Can you not get new M47 engines though?

A while back @Happyhippo bought the last new L Series - well, the last new one that Rimmers had dunno if it was the last last new one. M47s are much younger and may still be some new ones available.

Step daughter has an 06 120D. We had to replace a failing turbo, and yes it did smoke quite a bit !! We also had to do a serious flush on the DPF. Used a gallon of "off car" DPF cleaner for multiple flushes, and then ran a hose through it for 15 mins. No smoke afterwards !!

Worth a re-read - wise words from some distant members too !!
