I have a question regarding head gasket and thermostat.I think my head gasket has blown up.i was thinking to remove/bypass the thermostat which I think that caused the head gasket to blown up. i read before that one company in uk making modified thermostat for freelander that actually open when the engine temp still reasonably not too hot not like the one installed from the factory.anyone have any experience bout this? What do you guys think bout bypassing the thermostat? i also heard that this is what they do in tropical country such as asian to prevent overheating.

I think bypassing the thermostat would make the engine run cooler for sure. Trouble is, it may not get to the most ecenomical running temperature so fuel consumption will go up. I'm averaging 19mpg, not sure I'd want it to go down.
Also, is it good for an engine to run on the cool side?

agreed that the engine may run too cold in temperate climates like the uk.
a restrictor plate could be used instead. (simple plate with a hole).
or possibly a radiator blind?

Whats a restrictor plate? I live in melbourne australia and the temp is way hotter than uk.
anyone has heard modified thermostat?

Don't know any one who has tried it, i was in one of my dreaming moods....

Drive over for a holiday and get the work done, or get the bits mail ordered???

a restrictor plate is just a simple plate with a hole in it. (replaces the stat). size of hole decided by trial and error. use a different size hole for differing ambient temps.
in hot climates you may need no plate at all. just remove the stat.

a method of modifying the stat is to drill a hole/s in the outer plate ring. this will allow water to pass, even if the thermostat sticks.
again trial and error will decide how many/size holes are required.
obviously engine heating up times, will be increased.
