Hewwo chaps, I'm thinking of getting a TD4 and wondered if anyone can point me to a checklist or has any pointers to share? I already drive a V8 P38 and have had to learn a LOT just to keep it running (and also petrol's not cheap!). Quite fed up with hevac problems, bad wiring, leaks, ABS problems, EAS headaches. Don't get me wrong I've stayed mostly on top it and the car is very nice to drive but I just don't want / can't afford to repeat the experience. At the same time a smaller car is needed and I still want a 4x4 for German winters. Despite all the jokes at its expense, the freelander has been a market bestseller so I'm tempted.

Some of the questions I have:

1. What do you think of the TD4 engine?
2. Automatic gearbox?
3. Major weaknesses? I read a lot about VCUs, how's brakes, engine, gearbox, electrics?
4. There seems to a facelifted model from around 2004-5 before the Freelander 2 was launched. Is this in anywayy better than the earlier version or was it in fact purely cosmetic?
Is it worth coughing up for an early 2? Are they heaps better made or more reliable?

Whatever I buy I hope to keep it for at least 5 or 6 years and not have to pay its weight in gold every two years just to keep running!

Many thanks!

ps. what's this inside joke about the doors falling off in the wet??

Hippo's ultimate guide to buying a Hippo.

1. TD4 is great, best of the bunch all things considered.
2. Autobox is a little less fuel efficient but seems well respected.
3. Read Hippo's fred.
4. After 2001 they did alot to the electrics and transmission, so 2001 onward is betterer. Facelifted ones are prettierer as a bonus.

:).

:D just IMHO

Get a 'facelift' TD4 - auto-box is good if fluid is changed correctly - make sure the best tyres are on the rear wheels - and enjoy. :)

'Doors falling off in the wet.'

Dies ist britischer Humor. :p

Nicht in Deutschland verstanden.

Welcome to LandyZone, Freelander section. :D

Singvogel.

Get a 2 if you can afford - superior in every way, in my opinion or D3 perhaps!

Brilliant advice folks, thanks! Hippo's thread is super, makes you think tho, ulp! Yeah the 2 is still pretty expensive (especially here in Germany where used prices make no sense at all) and tbh I do actually prefer the facelift's looks. I hadn't even considered a disco, defeats the smaller second car idea but will give them a look. At the moment there's a 2005 facelift model just down the road. Done about 50k miles and asking €5k. If it checks out you may see me around here more often! :)

thanks again everyone und vogel, piep piep.

Good luck mate that sounds like a fair price. As long as the transmission is good you can't got that far wrong. Just do all the TD4 performance mods and you'll have a great car :).

simply this i love my TD4 freelander, if it s been well looked after there good stuff. Mine runs well and is 10 years old!!!!!!

I know! In fact its below market which is why it needs proper checking . Will be so happy if it turns out to be a good one.

Quick question, any problems with the turbo on these?

It's not something that I've seen come up here much, if at all :). It seems to be injector trouble mostly, but it should be fine. No one ever joins to say "Hi my FL works perfectly, kthxbai."

Oh also if it has any of the amigos (see sticky thread) trash him down on price and then replace the £15 brake light switch.
