Burnt out Gearbox

Hello,

I've just bought a Rangerover SE 4.0 from 1995. After a few hours I lost drive. Could not go foreward or backwards.

The garage says the cause for loss of drive is due to the filter being blocked with burnt out clutch material. The repair is going to cost me an arm and a leg as the gearbox needs to be replaced. The garage is going to use an overhauled gearbox.

Does anyone has a cheaper solution to resolve my problem?

Nope, just had mine replaced.....i'm hopping now and cant clap

Do you have any idea where I can have it replaced for a decent (but still good) price in the area of south west London?

Been there myself, no point trying to clean it out and fitting new clutches, the clutch probably burnt out due to a fault, probably a servo. Anyway make sure they change the torque convertor with the gearbox since it's impossible to clean it out and it will destroy the new gearbox.

How much did you have to pay, if I may be so bold...

Got mine done at the automatic gearbox company in derby.....your best bet is ashcrofts as its down south

I would agree - as you are in London go with Ashcrofts (even though I did have a bad experience with them which they eventually sorted after lots of moaning and then me turning up on their doorstep and protesting in reception) - make absolutely sure though that the torque converter is replaced and if it really did fail because debris clogged the filter then I would also have the cooler and lines to and from it done as well.

If you are any good with spanners. You can get a repair kit for clutches from Ashcrofts for £195.00. But you really will have to know what you are doing. It is not an amatuer job.

Yes you are right, the valve chest has to be stripped down and brake bands set up and the servo's checked, also the pressures have to be right at the right time, all a whole load of stuff I wouldnt even touch and I'm a mechanic. I put a set of clutches in a borg 35 I think and during the pressure tests it burnt them out again, customer request, a cheap fix that failed.

I have done a few in garages with the backup, and no real worries if it gave problems, when It's your own money I like to see a guarantee. Any that burnt out the clutches tho I might add went away and a recon box fitted, the clutch material gets everywhere and as has been said it's absalutely imperative that all that **** gets flushed out.

I did one myself at the side of the road on a rover, having to lay in the rain in the breakers removing a gearbox that couldnt be tested and having to unload the vehicle, my dads, trading it for a toyota, because the box had a fault.

So reputable, and guarantee are your two key words. But for the cost of this repair I bet I could buy another vehicle and use it for loads of spares.
