brown sludge in expansion tank

Hi was looking for some help i recently bought a freelander s 1800cc 52/reg and have noticed in the radiator expansion tank the water is brown and around the top of the tank there is brown sludge any ideas what would be causing this?:confused:

Best flush out ya system using a good [halfords] flush ,top it up put in inhibiter ,shame bout the weather as yer gonna have ta put in auntie freeze. . .and jist keep a check. . . .best oh luck. . . .:)
 
if it is brown, it is likely (but not definate) that it is old sludge - so yu might be lucky. first step is to remove tank and clean it with washing up liquid and a bottle brush to clean it. Flush it well before putting it back! That will give you a known clean starting position from which you can flush the system etc. if it comes back - yu know the sludge is being made afresh. check the dipstick to see if the oil is contaminated. Are you loosing water?

Thanks mad man will try this to-morrow checked the dip stick looks fine cars not over heating dont think its loosing water but only got car yesterday drove home fine over 110 miles so here,s hoping
 
car not overheating does NOT mean it aint the head gasket! (voice of experience). Check the water level FREQUENTLY - it can go V quickly.

Was there any particular years of manufacture that seemed to have problems with hg or is it over the whole range
 
1.8 and KV6 engines are both predisposed to HGF.

Yep classic hgf. Mine was similar story, a coolant pressure test and cylinder pressure test will confirm this. I drove for hundreds of miles with hgf, partly lazy and had the MOT coming up so didnt undertake the work.

Get the new LR gasket, LR advise fitting the new oil rail when using new gasket but not everyone does. If your gonna use the old head bolts then note their position and keep in that order. New set are £50

Change inlet seal on intake plenum and check thermostat opening temp (shld be 88oC) you may have to flush coolant with Fortes bio-degreaser. I used dishwasher powder without salt, has the same enzyme action when hot but you have to flush with copious amounts of water.

Plus IRD, Heater matrix, Radiator, and cylinder head all take quite a bit of flushing to remove all traces of gunge.

If you fit the new oil rail, check inside sump for amount of oil gunk, that will give you an idea of how long hgf has been going for.
