Broken Transmission/gearbox?

Hello Everyone!

Just experienced what sounded like a major break in my transmission/gearbox!

I've got a 1988 Land Regards Nintey, with what I believe is a 200tdi from a disco in it.

Drove down into town this morning and was driving fine, nothing out of the ordinary. As soon as I started driving home, I noticed something wasn't quite right.
(My knowledge really lacks with the transmission/gearbox and drivetrain with cars)

Drove for around 3 miles through town(max speed of about 30mph) and noticed a greater rumble than normal coming from below the gearstick, with the gearstick itself shaking more than normal.

Aswell as this, whenever I lifted my foot off the accelerator pedal, I hear a very loud clunk /click coming from below.

Then all of a sudden (whilst going over a speed bump) an almighty load of clunking and grinding happened. It sounded and felt as if somthing large fell out the bottom of the car and I was just dragging it along the road. Lost all power to the weels and couldn't move in gear without this clunking noise.

I managed to push it onto the side of the road in neutral and have left it there for the night.

I haven't even bothered to do any investigation, but it sounds like a major problem.

I'm going to go have a look tomorrow but luckily it's not too far from home.

Any preliminary thoughts on what this could be, and any troubleshooting to work out the problem would be appreciated.

Mine did something similar years ago, front input bearing in the gearbox had collapsed and something behind that had snapped. I just got another box because gearboxes are a black art to me.
Someone more knowledgeable will know more probably @jamesmartin
 
I'd also try to recover it home tonight, it might not be there tomorrow!
Maybe a shout out on LZR if you don't know anyone local personally.

I'll go have a look tomorrow, if it is the uj that's busted, I'll remove the prop and get it home in two wheel drive. Hopefully it's nothing more serious!

Luckily @Flossie it's in a safe place with pedal lock and steering wheel lock on!

There we go! Front propshaft, transmission side! I've got a 9/16th socket that's not got quite enough room to fit on the bolt. What's the benefit of the prop nut tool @Flossie .

At lest I know that once I've got it off I can just drive it home temporarily until I replace the bits.

Ha! Good news then really, easy cheap repair.
I should have said really that I use 3/8 drive deep socket on the nut and open end spanner sn the head where needed. I suspect your trying to use 1/2" drive?
The prop tool is waisted so fits on easier, I got one as a present but my 3/8 drive setup is better.
If you haven't got the smaller stuff it would be less hassle to buy the prop tool I think, around a tenner or so iirc, buy one when you order a new prop along with new nuts/bolts.
 
That joint would have been on its way out for some time, squeeking,rattling,vibration, the sound of a canary tweeting under your landy give the game away. Have seen a 110 where the prop let go at speed and smashed its way through the drivers footwell. The driver was lucky to escape with just bruising to the foot [ heavy work boot helped.]
UJ's need regular checking. Catch them soon enough and only the joint need be replaced.
 
Hi again,

After ages of being out of the country I'm finally getting around to ordering a new front propshaft.

Before I go ordering the wrong part, could someone with a bit more knowledge than me point me in the direction of the part I need.

It's a 1988 landrLand 90 front propshaft.

Below is a photo of the writing o cold find on the broken one :)

Front 4 cylinder.
All fronts are the same on 4 cylinder I believe.
Best wait for further confirmation just incase I'm wrong.
I stuck a cheapy britpart one on my 110 and it's been fine, grease it regularly.
 
looking at the yolk on that prop you won't be getting a bearing cup in there anytime soon, or am I just not seeing the photo properly? Looks to me like you may need a new prop,
