Hi Everyone

Ive been having some vibration issues recently on my 2006 TD4 man freelander so i thought id check out the driveshafts when i changed brakes the other day but im not sure if they were OK or broken. The boots are all fine, no cracks or anything. but there is some play if i rattle them abit. is this normal? ive posted a youtube clip so you can see what im on about. Ive also noticed a clicking noise when i accelerate. just a click, like somethings bouncing up and down as u move ur foot on the throttle on and off.
The vibration only occurs at 60mph and upwards, and only when i accelerate. smooth when releasing the throttle.

heres the clip

Do that test in the video again but with the wheel on and in contact with the ground. Mine would vibrate through the steering wheel until they would eventually give up altogether. When this happens it feels like you're driving on the wheel rim over rocks. Very noisy too. However, if you grip the shaft in you'r hand (no sniggering please) and move it from side to side, and you easily feel a bit of play,or you can get it to rattle then it's time to renew. Do this both sides of the vehicle to gauge how much play is normal as it's unusual for both to go at the same time. There should be a noticeable difference between a good and bad one. It's hard to say from the video as without the weight of the vehicle on it's wheels there is bound to be some slack.

how could you tell? vibration?

A got a heavy vibration as the engine was shaking. It was most noticeable at around 30 mph under moderate acceleration.
I could get the same vibration at any speed if I booted it (V6)

Right. Thanks for the replys guys, ill look into the matter tomorrow when i can get it on a lift and check Everything. ill let you know what i find!

So had it up on the lift the other day and did a complete check of the moving parts. And there is some play in the rhs driveshaft. well more atleast than the lhs one. however, i also found that the tyre pressures were way off so filled em up, and now the vibration seems to be gone? could the difference in tyre pressure activate the vcu causing a vibration in the propshaft perhaps? i found some play in the rear diff, could move it up/down about 2cm in each direction. Normal? Same goes for the VCU bearings, about 2cm play. And when i rattled the front propshaft where it goes in to the ird, there was a small amount of play with a clicking noise, kinda like the video i showed earlier, guessing thats normal. other than that, everything seems fine. I am however experiencing a judder when i release the clutch slowly and the engine is cold, but not when its warm. and a banging noise that can be felt under the seat when i do tight left turns in first gear with the clutch half way down (rarely happens)... so im guessing something is still wrong. Ideas?

Sounds like your diff bushes are shot, that could cause both the vibration and banging you describe, had this on mine, replaced them for poly bushes.
The VCU bearings are kind of floating in rubber mounts and can be moved so that sounds normal. When these bearings are worn you can hear and feel a rumble through the floor constantly when driving.
