break lights and hill climb ??

hi was wondering if anyone could help me out. we had been driving about in our freelander td4 suddenly the traction control came on with the hill decend and the only way we could turn it back of is to hit the brakes quickly could this be the abs sensor ? and roughly the same time as this started happening the left side break light stopped working i've had the bulb out and its fine i cleaned the socket out to make sure it had a connection but couldn't get it to work so i was wondering if it was the abs sensor that is coursing the hill descend and abs to come on could that also be effecting the brake lights aswell ??? any help that anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated as my dads landy is his baby
