just picked up a freelander td4 for the mrs and on the way back noticed the braked lacked stopping power on the first push of the pedal they seem reasonable but not what i expected, if you pump the brakes couple of times there is next to no brakes at all pedal is very hard.

5seconds later they go back to being just ok it has passed an mot like this two days ago but i dont think its right even my disco stops better than this old pig lol

servo, but most likely non return valve and if diesel possibly vac pump

not sure i bought it in the dark in the rain with a warm engine as you do when buying freelander if it is boiling fluid whats that mean ?

can i boil an egg in it :D

Brake fluid dot 4 is hydroscopic- absorbs water and if really ****ty and old it can lower boiling point till the fluid boils=crap brake pedal

right so ive been out to have a look this morning and have found a fault i followed the vaccume line to the right hand side of the engine (if your stood looking at the windscreen) and found that a pipe was split and was hissing so i tried to remove it and broke the plastic part off where the pipe connects to, it was connected to a black cylinder thing underneath coolant pipes ect what is that and where can i get one it looks to be bolted on with one bolt

bodged it back together sorted !!! and the wife is doing something with her face kind of looks like smiling

i had the same symptoms recently , it was the rear drums/shoes theyd got wet in deep puddles when we had the heavy rain basically the dust had solidfyed and was jamming a rear drum on which over heated the fluid and make the brakes irratic from working to very spongey , whipped the drumms off and stripped then cleaned them up was fine after, its a bit of a flaw theres nowhere for the dust to fall out of them..
