Went to drop the oil out of the axle for the forthcoming atb diff install and the crap that came out was orrible!
Basically rebuilt the axles 6 years ago and change diff oil regularly, both Cv internal seals have blown, I'm thinking I may of put too much grease in (I seem to remember giving a few pumps of the grease gun about 6 months ago) or maybe my breather is blocked /corroded.
I think I used britpart seal which could in part explain something, and the bearings need slightly tightening so I'm not too sad about stripping it down.
Any one have any other ideas of why they might both of blown?

Breather i would have thought?

I suppose if the breather was blocked it would force the diff oil through the swivel/halfshafts seal and then allow the cv grease back through the damaged seal, will have to check it out tomorrow, bloody annoying! Picked up parts today and the guys at the garage say fill grease to top of housing, like you do with oil, that's a bit more than two full cartridges in the grease gun, per side, it seems alot and I'm slightly worried it will cause seal failure again, any ideas of the correct amount?

I usually buy that one shot stuff, and that gives you 340 - 370 ml per side depending on the brand. I had assumed that was about the right amount. When I take them apart, usually several years later it certainly looks like the joint hasn't been running dry, so it looks like plenty.

Yes I would use the one shot pack, you then know it’s not being overfilled,
Also remember the earlier housing that used oil had a small level plug 2/3 of the way up the housing to make
Sure you didn’t overfill,

If it's rammed full of grease it'll create to much friction, so heat and, therefore, pressure on the seals. Another vote for one shot here.
