Hi, I have a range Rover 4.0 SE Petrol, Its a Rangie which i havent use, placed a battery on the car to get the boot open, but the button seems to be stuck in, no spring action/travel , but the boot/hatch wont open. I can get inside so could i open from inside? Cheers Colin

The tailgate button is a momentary contact, which triggers the BECM to fire a solenoid to open the tailgate (I believe), so your options are to try prising the button out with a small screwdriver, then see if it contacts, or take the inside trim off the lower tailgate, remove the 2 pole plug from the back of the switch, and short out the plug to fire the tailgate release.

Mine jammed in once when it was iced up. I recall it constantly fired the solenoid until the battery drained, but that could have been the effect of water ingress as much as the button being stuck. Maybe yours is jammed in, but not making contact.

got this from a thread a bit further down called TOTAL LOCK OUT

pull wires from bottom right of lower tailgate down (in a black sleeve) all the wires will be white. connect a wire to earth (towbar works well) attatch a pin to the other end. get someone to hold the tailgate release button in. probe the white wires one at a time very briefly, when you hit the right one the boot will pop. make sure you only do it briefly as if you hit the live feed you will pop the fuse then it gets more complicated.

When you have gained access as per what endeleus said about taking off the panel and activating the function - make a new spring from coathanger or other metal wire, i used some galvanised fence wire coiled around screwdriwer cut to size - greased all up working perfectly every time, if your seal is broken get a new of fleabay or elsewhere very cheaply.

Or if you're not an engineer save yourself the work and just buy a new release switch unit? Cheap enough and easy to replace.

I find the grit and crap from the roads gets caught in mine causing to jam in - compressed air and WD40 keeps it going. I have seen on some a rubber cap you fit over the switch to prevent this - although Im sure this will eventually lead to problems with moisture retention.

You call £40 for a simple push button cheap? You must be a fecking banker with a big bonus:rolleyes:
I made a spring for mine with a bit of piano wire from the local model aircraft shop:)

It's possible to source one for £9-22 or cheaper second hand. For the OP and for those who apparently, like me "the fecking banker with a big bonus" works all 7 days in a week, days and nights, doesn't see much of my family and earns peanuts.

You'll see there's plenty available - when you do the research first.
