Hi,

Sorry in advance if this has been asked multiple times before, but i did a search and didn't come up with an answer. Just installed a Tim's boost gauge (upto 2 bar) on my defender 90 300tdi. I fitted it by removing the handy bolt on the back of the manifold and replaced with a banjo with the pipe to guage attached there. Took out for a drive and the Max boost it read was 0.5 bar which seems a little low? Is this correct? and what would the likely causes be?

Thanks
Howard

Pressure should be 1 Bar at the turbo waste gate 'T' connector, check it is correct at that location first. if it is good/close there then you may have a boost leak after the turbo (pipes/intercooler/clamps). Pressure will always be a bit lower at the manifold due to restrictions in pipework / cooler.

Pics of the bolt you removed?

should be this one

should be 1-1.2bar (16psi) max

i'd check for any leaks around the pipes and also that your wastegate isn't stuck partially open or that the bit you plugged in isn't leaking :)

btw, can you confirm what banjo size you bought?

Thanks for the advice, I will check it at waste gate T connector tomorrow and see what it reads.

@Trax that is where it is located and it a M12x1.5 bolt.

What's best way to tell if waste gate stuck open slightly?

i'd just check it isn't seized up.

unclip the rod and make sure it moves easily enough... or if you have an airhose, stick 16psi down the hose to the actuator and see if it moves alright.

it's a bit tight to do, so i'd be checking the hoses first for leaks or delamination as it's easier :)

Thanks for your help. I'll have check tomorrow and see if can see any leaks and make sure it not seized.
