Posting this on behalf of my Dad, so apologies for anything that I've missed.

The oil warning light came on as my Dad was driving home - he pulled over immediately and switched off the engine. There was still plenty of oil so after towing it to the garage and an inspection, the oil pump was replaced.

All sorted...or so he thought. On his way home from the garage, the engine blew up - seems a big end has gone. So now he's after a replacement engine - he was asking a while back if there were any preferred alternative engines to get a bit more power and/or efficiency, so now seems a logical time to persue this option if its feasible. So, any offers as to what the Td5 could be (easily) replaced with?

Currently looking about for a replacement Td5, so if anyone has any to offer, please let me know.

Just as another point, as this blew up on the way back from the garage, do you think (as I do) that its likely that the garage screwed up and basically caused this problem? I suppose its proving it, but I find it highly suspect that it has gone just after a "repair"... I suppose I'm basically asking if anyone has had a similar experience.

Sounds like the famous bolt failure on the oil pump drive. Basically engine was wrecked before Dad managed to switch off due to no oil pressure at all, just like Ross Floyds engine in one of the mags.

TD5 secondhand tend to be expensive and maybe dubious, but with all the elecktrickery you are probably stuffed and have to replace with same. Try someone like Equicar or CWS who break Landies regularly. Otherwise find someone to rebuild the engine properly.
 
I think that wud depend on what "inspection" the garage had done. It might be worth a try, on the premise that "nothing ventured - nothing gained."

Ahh, nuts. I was afraid it'd be something "common". Still, you'd expect a specialist to tell you these things, or at least be aware that it could happen.

Or perhaps thats wishful thinking...

Yeah, we'll have to price up a rebuild vs a replacement. As for the electrics, I suppose it'd obviously have to be stripped out and reassembled according to the new (non-Td5) engine if we went that route...which could be a bit of a nightmare...

It'll all come down to cost and time in the end.

Looks like its the same issue we've had... as stated earlier. Just gotta make sure My Dad's got the relevant bolt and we'll get in touch with Land Rover.

There is a non gadget engine on the market, it's made in the same factory as the 300 Tdi engine. It's the 2.8 TGV International It comes as a complete direct replacement for the 300. You can get rid of all that fangled computer stuff from the Td5. There may be some people on here that can tell you a bit more about it or there may be some who have one fitted and can give you their opinion.

It is a mission to fit one to a TD5. You need a tdi bell housing, air filter and lots of other bits including the instruments. This makes it a bit of a pain to fit and more expensive. Our local man here won't fit one to a TD5 any more after doing one or two.

ps the 2.8 TGV isn't made any more, so he is trying to source another engine from Brazil that will be reasonably easy to fit. The replacement for the TGV is a 3l four which may be an easy bolt-in, we hope.
 
Ere Brad,the TD5 was designed and built up the M5 and turn right - not by those Brash Germans.
I'll be in touch later in the week,bit up to me neck at the mo,just got back off hols and the Vats due.Gareths SRS is still giving me grief.
 
You know what I mean Mr C it wer alright til the krauts got hold of um, nothing wrong with the Tdi's. Nice to know your back hope you had a nice time down under. You ain't missed much in the landy world in our neck of the woods, just the wifes sarnies!
 
Its a pain not being at home to help out sometimes...

My Dad had to buy a new (used) engine and is currently having it fitted. Unfortunately he couldn't really wait any longer as its a works machine.

He spoke with Land Rover Customer Service who originally said there was nothing they could do...until he mentioned that this problem was featured on Watchdog at which point they changed their tune. Eventually they came back stating that the original problem was found on Discoveries, and as our vehicle is a Defender, there was nothing that they could do.

So, despite the fact that its exactly the same engine in both vehicles, they won't do anything for us. (I assume its exactly the same as they're both Td5s - I'm assuming there isn't a small difference between them.)

Make sense? I don't think so. Maybe Watchdog will be interested to know that Defenders suffer the same fate as Discoveries...

Anyone got any ideas as to the best way to approach this situation? Currently thinking the obvious option is to write a strongly worded letter and see how that goes down (probably to the bottom of a bin), but not sure exactly where we stand legally...

I guess further enquiries are required on our part.

Thanks for the info on the 300 Tdi - did think about this, but we figured as someone else stated - doing a swap for all the other wiring and whatnot would be more hassle and time than we had to spare.

How many people have had Td5s blow up in their Defenders then?
