Had fun blanking the EGR, here's some pics

This has defo changed the performance of my Disco, the acceleration has definitely improved!

Out of interest, what sort of miles have you got on it? I'm expecting to fit the kit this week on an '01 with 166k on the clock. I've just picked up some brake cleaner to clean the MAP whilst I'm at it. But, the manifold will have to wait a bit longer, unless it looks heavily caked. I've seen a clip of a guy cleaning his with oven cleaner and a jet wash...I thought oven cleaner was caustic and would attack the alloy, so not sure I want to use than on my manifold.

i've got 133k on mine.

tbh, i'm not sure how to clean my manifold either!

my bro reckons brake cleaner will do, but i'm not convinced. I've seen a few vids on youtube, 1 guy used a flame thrower and petrol to burn it off :s
 
Whilst there seems plenty of witch-craft and voodoo options out there, all the rest seem incredibly dirty, like soaking in diesel, then engine cleaner, then scrubbing and jet washing. Can't say I fancy all those pollutants all over my drive - or me. So, I'm looking at a local vapour blasting service to see if they would be willing to clean it for a reasonable price. If that fails, I'll see if the local garage will let me dip the thing in their parts cleaner for a small fee. Given that clean intake manifolds seem to go for less than £30...the solution here needs to be less than that frankly.

The idea of creating a small blast furnace inside an alloy manifold seems destined to end badly :oops:

I think it worked quite well from what I remember, however, it was on youtube so anything is possible lol.

For the price, it would probably be better to just buy a new 1, saves the hassle of having to clean it.

Maybe there's a place thats sells 1's that have already been cleaned on a swap type basis? something to look into maybe?
 
Be careful with the MAP when you clean it, Pretty sure I managed to kill mine when I cleaned it using electrical contact cleaner, I suspect I did not dry it off completely before I refitted and started the engine, although I thought it was. As it worked before I took it off and then after it was fubarred ( or it could be a coincidence ....)

I didn't bother with mine ... i might look at cleaning it when i take the manifold off next year

Yeh, they don't look cheap...I'm going to seal the electrical contacts with a bag and tape first, then very carefully spray the cleaner on the sensor and pray to the gods of luck and mercy that I don't knacker it.

I paid £60 delivered for mine, but if I had known it was a risk I would have cleaned it and left it to dry overnight before refitting. But hey ho you live and learn.

you better clean the MAP especially that you bypassed the EGR, it's important to get accurate readings from it and it's a 2 minute job

so, to clean it is a quick 2 minute job, but to be safe it needs to be left to dry over night.

how did you knacker it? did you clean it and put it back wet?

Well cannot confirm it, but it worked before I cleaned it with contact cleaner, and then it did not work, either a coincidence? got damaged when being cleaned ?, not sure how that could happen. Or it maybe was not completely dry when it was refitted and that caused it to break, although I thought it was dry.

Any way I look at it, I would rather leave it to dry overnight if I cleaned the new one. No great hassle to refit in the morning before starting out.

no need lo let it dry at all, blow it 1 minute with a hair dryer if you think some cleaner residue can hurt it but i dont see the reason why, i've cleaned mine several times and fitted it right back wihout any problems.
 
I was thinking that, I bet I could wade through some dirty river that could cover the sensor ... I think maybe something else happened to your sensor when you unplugged it, maybe cracked a wire or something ?

I would hope that you would not get crud from a river over the MAP sensor inside the manifold!!!!!!!!!!! ..... LOL.. that is what i cleaned , not the outside connection side.

I agree it may have been something else that caused the sensor to stop working, could have been coincidence , I do not know. But I would make sure it was dry before I put it back just to eliminate a further risk.

not the actual sensor thats inside the manifold, but the wires on the outside.

I will clean mine this weekend and let you guys know what happens :)

fingers crossed it doesn't break :s
