Big trip...Defender 90 hard top

I am possibly going to undertake a round trip of around 4000miles, the trip will be down UK and then through france spain etc...

The engine in my 90 has nearly done 12,000, its a 15J - same as the 19J but was slightly differently designed in that the plate covering the timing belt can be changed in 45mins and so the water pump is in a different location.

She has done around 148,000miles however the gearbox was factory reconned about 12,000miles ago when the engine was fitted, along with new clutch plate.

I have changed the master clutch cylinder, injection pump was reconditioned by lucas around 1500miles ago, and the lift pump was replaced then too.

So, basicly I would like as much information here on what I should do before under taking this trip, what I should carry, and what checks etc should be carried out. I have a small list, i.e. some spare tubing (as mentioned in a post in here a few weeks ago, I had fun with diesel lines on the motorway!)

I was planning on doing a full oil check/change on everything. From the engine to the steering box.

I just want to be fully prepared.

i drive a 3000 mil round trip to spain every year and have a fortnight driving around in spain. i only ever take with me a jack and wheel brace and my trusty AA european cover card.

so your reckoning, just give it a service before I go, and then just make sure I got my cover card.

I can see your point, but I just thought it might be worth carrying a few things.

Probally give it a big service before I go, and get the stuff I can't do/don't have tools for done at a garage.

well thats just what i do, it depends how much faith you have in your landy.i know people that carry a full spares kit with them but it just takes up room and adds weight, so i just take my card, at the end of the day you aren't doing the trip in 1 hit so you should be exherting your landy. AA euro cover is the best on the market if the worst comes to the worst they will drag you all the way home, saving on fuel money so you can afford to get it fixed
