Hi, my 08 Freelander 2 has Avon Cooper A/T3 tyres in size 215/70/R16 on it (when I bought it) and I have found that one rear tyre has worn much faster than the others, so am looking to replace the rear two before the MOT. The front two have loads of tread on them. I have 3 questions:
a) Are 215/70/R16 the correct size? According to the paperwork I have, it had 215/75/R16 Continentals on it originally. The spare is another size again, which is worrying.
b) Do I need to replace all four at once? My mechanic says no, tyre shop said yes. Manual says nowt.
c) Are Avon A/T3 the best tyres for the job? They are pretty noisy at the rear at around 50mph.
Landy is used for motorway, B roads, farm and mountain tracks for work. Good little machine, has taken me some nice places off-road and is comfy on a long run.
Apologies, I tried to search the forum but couldn't find an answer to a) or b)
Thanks :)

It's the 2.2 TDI SE I think. Has 16" wheels I'm presuming from the tyre sizes? I'm happy with that, just wondering if I have the correct tyres on it.

Ok so Avon A/T3 don't seem to come in that size, and I was going to replace the 2 worn ones with the same make. Does this mean I have to buy four new ones in the different size? Or will it be okay? Heck I'm no tyre expert, so am now confused!

Your tyres seem small to me. Is it a basic model?
Hi this thread seems to recommend this size?

    hi

i sure this has been covered before but

what is the maximum size tyre that will fit on a 16" rim that will fit without a 2" lift ?

and which tyre with a lift?

    thanks lee

Lee, yes this has been done to death but it's almost a rite of passage now.

Basically the biggest size without lift is 205/80/R16, HOWEVER, no fooker makes good tyres in that size. So I'd suggest getting 215/70/R16, either BF Goodrich or General Grabber AT.

There's lots of other in that size but not AT and certainly not as good. If you want AT tyres those two can't be beaten. I'm putting the BFG's on mine.

    Will.

I'd buy 4 of the size, possibly make that the car was supplied with when it left the factory. It's very unwise to have a mix of sizes and makes on the same vehicle, especially a 4X4. All the tyres need to be the same to avoid transmission damage.

Yes I know not to mix sizes, I either need to replace two of the current size or buy four new in the other size. But then I can't get the A/T3 s in the bigger size. The post I found above seems to recommend the current size. Nowhere can I find a list of suitable tyre sizes for the 16" wheeled Freelander, sadly :( Thanks folks anyway.

Don't mix brands.
Don't mix sizes.
Don't mix tread patterns.
Don't mix wear levels.
Don't mix inflation pressures.
Apart from that, feel free :)

Ok thanks, that's cool. I'll stick to four Avon A/T 3 s then, I've had no probs with them and they are good and grippy on the hill :)

If you're happy having different tyre size to how the car was tested and certified, the wrong size tyres with a smaller radius and less ground clearance and speedo being out then stick with the current size

I was going with WLJayne's advice that I found on this forum and posted upthread. Hard to get 75 profile tyres at reasonable cost in the back of beyond in Wales, but plenty 70s. General Grabbers, BFG, A/t3s and Yokohama Geolander seem to be what people recommend all over this forum and these do not seem to be available in the 75 profile, have been all over the web looking for them, no joy.
