I recently bought a replacement fuel pump for the Series 3 that I am slowly resurrecting. Thinking I was being smart I avoided the blue box and at great expense purchased a “quality aftermarket and original equipment (OEM) branded part not to be compared to the cheaper branded parts available” but on fitting the union to the intake side I discovered the upper casting was made of cheese and it just crumbled away like a good aged cheddar (most annoying as it cost quite a bit more than the normal rubbish and shipping over here added a chunk again).

So my question to you good fine folk is are there any better quality brands out there at the moment or do I just order a couple of cheap ones and carry the spare?

That does look like a faulty casting .. send the seller that photo and he should honour a replacement.
At least, I would expect him to.
Who was the seller (sounds like Transglobal's advertising nonsense) ?
I have contacted them and in fairness they replied straight away and are following up with their supplier.

What is the general policy on outing sellers and the like on the forum, I don’t want to bad mouth anyone and so far they have been very good as far as communication goes…good guess though :)

I find Transglobal quite good, although I check first what I am getting.
In general OEM means, at the best, slightly better than crap.
Unless of course it has an actual branded label/packaging.

Just out of curiosity, who actually was the OE supplier back in the day ?
AC Delco ?
The whole "OE" thing is little better than a scam.
Basically if you bought the company who bought the company who bought the company that originally manufactured something, you get the trademark rights, and the right to sell cheap pattern copies as OE or "Geniune"
Not worth anything IMHO

I believe the original ones were AC Delco but it seems there have been a few different companies copying it. The one I took off mine was manufactured by an Italian company called BCD who have a website but never replied to me when I contacted them.
