I'm considering a 4x4 for backcountry exploring
in the Sierras. Nothing extreme, just something
that is suited for typical backcountry roads.

What web sites are best for a newbie to learn?

just input 4x4 into google.
But I uses www.4x4wire.com
Sure, it's a bit more hardcore, but any issues can get delt with, since
they've been there, done that, and broke worse on a rock... even separate
sections for most of the major popular brands.

I drive an 88' Isuzu Bighorn (Trooper in the states), great hauler with
impressive offroad ability.
