Drove a Chevy Tracker yesterday,is it the best I will get for MPG ?

So I guess that '98 Cherokee is a nogo. My philosophy on mpg ... for me it's
not so much miles per gallon, but more like gallons per month ... because
.... my Cherokee was purchased to do a particular task ... pull a 3000 lb
boat. So ... I manage by gpm by leaving the jeep in the laneway now and
then.

A diesel is generally better than a petrol, the 03 Isuzu Trooper with 3
litre 4JX1 engine is good, But I'm not sure what is available in the US, so
many good economical diesels are just ignored for the US market with such
poor quality diesel and cheap petrol.

Throughout North America, economy and 4x4 are uneasy partners.. owning a 4x4
in the US or Canada is all about getting from A to B regardless of
conditions.. how much one pays for the privilege is not really a problem..
well maybe it is, but how bad do you want to get from A to B?..

Look at the Highlander Hybrid coming out this year from Toyota. I think this
will be the best MPG 4x4 for a family of 4.

Stay away from the Tracker Auto trans. if you want the best MPG. The 4dr.
tracker gets about 20-22mpg on freeway and 17-20mpg city. The torque
converter just sucks up the gas. By keeping a very light foot on the gas, I
got up to 27mpg on the freeway. Once you press the pedal past half way, the
lock up torque converter releases, then you are back down to 22mpg. With a
small engine, you have to drive like a grandma not to press the gas pedal
more than half way. In real life, a manual trans is better for economy even
though the EPA say they get the same mileage.
However, the auto has the torque multiplication for slow speed driving. In a
truck with such low ground clearance, you do want to go very slow over the
rocks.
Per the EPA guide, the Tracker gets the best mileage of any 4x4 with a real
low range transfer case. There are other AWD 4x4 that gets better mileage,
but they do not have the low range.

Forgot to say in my previous post, the MPG was for a 4cyl. 04 models on ly
come with the V6. Those are gas guzzler for their size.

If fuel economy is a priority stay away from 4x4's. You should be looking
at AWD cars, though a tracker is essentially that. Checkout the Subaru's,
great cars and they have AWD in many models. A Forester probably has what
you are looking for.

I agree with the above statement. The Subaru would provide an
economical alternative.

Yup. If you don't have a turbo, your Forester could approach 30MPG on
road trips. If you do have a turbo, on a good day, you could turn in 13s at
the strip. Quite a car.
