I am not going to explain this but,
Toyota Landcruiser!!!. The best looking will be a Series or Defender
Land Rover though.
I do not own one. So that is not the reason I mention it.
Mine is a http://www.fotograaf.com/trooper

I would say the Ford Bronco would be the best four wheel drives. Why I
wont go there but it is simply the best.

Mine, because it's paid for.

"Best" anything means nothing without context.
Best 4x4 to get the kids to soccer practice and bring
the groceries home in Quebec means something completly
differant than best 4x4 to tackle the rubicon.

This question is sort of useless.

You must ask:

"What is the best 4x4 for your needs" or

"What is the best 4x4 for a specifc purpose"

A Porsche Turbo is a 4x4 and one of the best cars there is but if I
need a 4x4 to drive over rocks and mud the Porsche will be a sucker.

The recent japanse noframe, light 4x4 are great for soccer moms driving
through town. But they wouldnt last long in the terrain my truck goes.

My truck is built so it does exactly what I need it to do. It would
suck in the hands of a soccer mom.

I could be wrong, but aren't those made by Ford? Maybe Ford buys them from
Japan....

Same thing ... light 4x4 without frame. Great for city slickers and the
trip to the skihill.

Some domestics are relabeled japanese ... Ford Ranger and Some Nissan
are IMO identical ...

you get the idea...

Get the 4x4 that suits YOU and not the "best"

Matt

I would say that your driver is going to be the largest determination
factor in a 4x4. For me, a good 4x4 can go damn near anywhere, and
still be able to roll back out onto pavement to head home. Granted with
some off road mods I may only hit 55mph on the freeway I think its a
pretty good trade off. My suggestion would be a Discovery over a
defender for this type of 4x4.
Reasoning, well, its comfortable, heater leather seats, 6 cd changer,
warm in winter, cool in summer. And the suspension articulates enough
that most of the time you never realize how precarious your situation
is.

And as to the Freelander... who is the crack smoker that told you they
are made in Japan? They are still LR and made in England..Ford may own
them and really f#*k it up, but for now they are really nice, well
built and pretty capable for the average driver.

The Crusiers are nice as well but without a lot of mods they dont
articulate as much which may tend to make the average driver a bit
nervous when they hit that 40 degree angle.

My wifes uncle just bought an 04 Nissan Marono, indevidual climate
control, onstar tracking, 4x4, beutiful car, . And I have an 81 Jeep CJ7, 4
1/2" lift, 33" BFGs, detroit in the back.
Now which do you think I would say would be the best for going up into the
mountains for that one fishing hole no-one else gets to and which one do you
think I would want to go on a winter vacation accross the rockies in, best
is only best for what you are doing.

Uh, maybe some Japanese are relabled domestics..... Ford builds the
Mazda pickup. (It is a Ranger with revised body work.) Chevy builds
pickups and SUVs for Isuzu.

Nissan doesn't have a US domestic match (or vica versa). Nissan and
Toyota are both building some if not all/most of their trucks in the
US.

The best 4x4? For me, it is the one I'm at the time the question is
asked. Figure out what is important to you in a 4x4. Do the
research and find out what suits your needs.

My crack pipe is full of Mazda-made Freelander hash!! Sorry to burst
you bubble. The Mazda 'Tribute' Ford 'Escape' and LR 'Freelander' are
all made on the same (Japanese) platform. However, please don't let
that lessen your opinion of the Freelander. Being made on the same
platform does not mean they are the exact same vehicle. Suspension,
gear ratios, engine and transmission selections make the Freelander
different enough from its two siblings to be considered a true entry
level Land Rover.

My input on the greater discussion is the 80 series Landcruiser. Its
only rival is the Range Rover by LandRover of course. Both of these
are truely designed from the ground up to be rugged, reliable off
"paved" road vehicles. I say off paved roads because that is what they
are designed for. Let's face it, most of the world is accessed by dirt
roads and trails. Only us crazy Americans would take vehicles into the
woods or rocks just to play. For this crazyness you must modify any
stock 4X4.

Hey-- Do you have any refence point for the Freelander platform, when
it changed over etc... I was under the impression that the Freelander
was on its own platform, or at least it was when it started over in the
UK (1994?) My sig other just picked up a 04 HSE that I have been really
impressed with, however I am an avid Ford-hater... so Im just wondering
where the line is drawn. What about the LR3 is that sharing a platform
with any other products?? Thanks!!!

Okay-- I think somehow you have been misinformed... a pretty intesive
search has shown that there currently is no platform sharing in any of
the Land Rover products. At least up to 05. Most notable was this

Land Rover: New Car Reviews & Ratings
This British company got its start in 1948, and has since become knon
for selling exclusive sport-utility vehicles. It is now a division in
the Ford family, however its vehicles share no engines or platforms
with other Ford products. Land Rover vehicles are sold in over 140
countries worldwide. Used Land Rover Reviews | All Land Rover Reviews

this from:
http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/new/index.cfm/act/make/divisionid/1611

I also read somewhere that the Rovers are still being made in thier own
factory in UK, however, now with Ford at the helm, who knows what will
happen, I know that Jag has been assimilated and while the new Jag
performance is highly touted I still think it looks like a Taurus.

now there you go feeding the trolls :)

Totally depends on what you're looking for in a vehicle. For me, it has to be
the Jeep Rubicon for a stock rig from the factory. If you need a truck, well
then it's going to be the new version of the Dodge Powerwagon. To bad it does
not come with the Cummins diesel though:)
