After my little episode the other week and finding my cam belt had jumped 2 teeth i re-set the timing and started the old girl up with the thinking it will either be OK or i will hear low compression on start up or a lumpy run. I would check for compression but have found that because the engine only has 2 glow plugs, a special tool is required to check.

She started up as normal with just a sniff of the ignition key and ran fine. Gave her a rev and she seemed all right but as the engine wasn't on its mount and just hanging in the engine bay i decided not to drive it up the road....

Put a new cam belt on for good measure and whilst i was dirty i replaced the fuel pump belt and pulley. I checked, re-checked turned the engine round 2 times. re-checked an double checked all timing. I didn't want a doubt in my mind about it.

Took for a small test drive and in the short run around the centre of town she seemed alright, a bit ticky maybe but fine otherwise.

Drove home tonight, its first good run and noticed its not quite got as much poke in as she used to. No huge amount of smoke out the back and she is running smoothly and had thought if i bent a valve i then she would run on 3?

Back to the ticking noise. Its not a real loud noise but noticeable to me, Similar to exhaust leak near the manifold which make me return the the thought of maybe a bent valve? I really cant believe she runs after jumping 2 teeth so i would assume there is damage somewhere ...i would have thought the valves but surely i would hear it?

Can someone offer some logical advise before my brain melts? I was trying to avoid having the strip the head 'just to see' if there was any damage as its my only car right now because the range rover has head gasket leak (surprise surprise)

Also would anyone have a tool to check L series compression test? I doubt it but worth an ask. Might just have to ring local stealer and borrow one

after a few hours of poking around on the tinterweb it seems unlikely i will have bent a valve as they aren't at an angle. Maybe more likely bent a pushrod. I will keep digging but was hoping that somone might have experiance on the engines.
