I'm in Berryhill Park, Mansfield! Driving from Wakefield a belt has disintegrated in my engine bay covering it in melted plastic. There seems to be wrapped up belt of sorts around the radiator. The power steering has gone, brakes are very stiff. And there is a burnt plastic smell throughout.
It's in a driveable condition and the RAC are on their way to see what they can do. But I'm thinking foresight in what I'll need to do to it this weekend! I've got a 200 mile drive back to base late tomorrow as well so I need it all fixed by then! Any help/suggestions welcomed! It's a Defender 90 TD5, 2.5 TDI 2001

I will update on any progress the RAC wo/man does.
Thanks

Yep RAC guy said idler pully stopped. Just paid £171 to get it towed back north as I'm not covered. #### my life. Nothing he can do. I've begged and pleaded with Simon Services and he's gonna help me outside of his office hours

That's tough. Get yourself RAC/AA cover with recovery, never own a L/R vehicle without it.

What caused the stiff brakes in the end?

Aux belt doesn't run the vac pump which is the only thing that should have any impact on the brakes if it were engine related.

I am unsure as of yet, I am down at my base and my 90 is up at Simon Services near Wakefield on holiday for the week getting a health check. I am calling them tomorrow or Saturday morning to see what the damage to my wallet is along with what happened that day exactly. I'm no mechanic, but ifloochies sounds like he's onto something.

If I'm not mistaken, the vacuum pump is run off the alternator drive, so I assume with the belt gone, charging and vacuum for the brakes would be taken out too.

Yes you are right, I read his post as him having a TDI though, he has put: " It's a Defender 90 TD5, 2.5 TDI 2001"
