You may have blocked the fuel system with all the rubbish at the bottom of the tank,

Are you deffently sure it ran out of petrol and didnt just conk out for another reason?

Yep definitly out of fuel :( I'm used to driving a 106 which goes miles on not a lot of fuel I also thought a fuel light would come on tip I discovered it doesn't have one! I've tried the inertia switch but nothing happend although at the mo have the battery charging which my dad thinks may help as it's not got enough power to fire

When you turn the ignition on have a listen out for the fuel pump,
I would put a little more fuel in and try again once the battery has charged
