I've recently bought an S3 with only a bottom tailgate on it. It has a hard top, so I have also bought a Safari type back door, complete with hinges, to replace the tailgate.
Where the door hinges ought to go on the top and on the tub there are no holes! I shall have to drill some, however, looking at the parts list, it only shows the hinges and the bolts, washers and nuts - should there be a backing plate of some kind shown?

It is a good idea to have a spreader plate.

Remove the tailgate cleat on the hinge edge too as this will get in the way of the door opening

The 110s also have a third hinge halfway up that goes into the tub cappings to reduce wear if you mount your spare on the door

I guess there isn't an easy way to be able to quickly swap between tailgate and door? Tailgate-plus-catflap seems like the least-worst way of having a hardtop that you can swap to topless.

Hmm... Or fit that third hinge, then have a second tailgate that's been sawn in half. Stable door, style.

I used the hinge as a template and cut 2mm thick aluminium plates. Some where used as spreader plates on the inside and some as shims on the outside to get the bugger to line up ! The third hinge is a good idea, tends to keep everything in line rather than rely on the two.
