Time for a big service before winter, new anti freeze etc. Though I'd remove the RAD to give it a good flush. No chance, bottom bolts so rusted they are unmovable, no access for a cutter or even a drill, would have to bust the RAD to get it out:mad: OK so forget that, flush in situe. Time to drain the block, what a joke the drain plug is not exactly accessable. Managed to blow the water out with low pressure from the airline. Must have got it nearly all out as it has so far taken ten litres to re-fill without running the engine.
Noticed an immediate problem when it comes to getting the air out, the bleed pipe from the top of the rad dips down as soon as it leaves the RAD then goes back up to the expansion tank, perfect for an airlock if it fills with liquid.
I removed it and fitted a length of clear plastic tube which I tied up to the bonnet safety catch giving a good air bleed path.

Why is it that everything on a P38 is either rusted solid or inaccessable?:mad::mad:

Specifically designed so the less mechanically minded will take it back to the LR Dealer Service Centre so LR can wrench the f**k outta the mug....

As for the rust, scientifically formulated to f**k you up, f**k you off and get you to buy a new Land Rover so the LR Dealer can wrench the f**k outta you (again)....:D:p:D

For sure I'll never buy another.

Only trouble is they never ever work properly, there is always something that needs doing. With the benefit of hindsight I should have kept my old Galloper and re-engined it. Can't remember how many years I had it, but the only item that failed was the glowplug relay.

La gasp. Does this mean Lord Datatek will be switching to the jap side? Say it ain't so Johnny!

If I'd had the cash for a Mitsi Pajero or a Land Cruiser I would never have been here in the first place:) I'm no lover of LR or the Range Rover, I got it cos it was cheap and they are cheap cos everyone knows they are crap:rolleyes: My next move will be in a box so I would hope I won't be going anywhere too soon, can't afford another car so I'm stuck with it:(

They wouldn't be any fun if they didn't break lol

There a hobby remember :p

If mine didn't break so much I probably wouldn't know how they work like I know now

I feel your frustration at rusted bolts and the like, and you have been consistent in your criticism of LR over the years. But surely even a reliable Pajero is a step back to the dark ages, a P38 must be a better place to spend your time, even if its a diesel;)

The Land Cruiser may be a step up from a Pajero but the eldest is a mech at a Toyota main stealer and a bench mark for reliability they are not. He see's them all the time.Had a 53 plate in last week that had a full service and the (Land Cruiser) equivalent of new air springs on the back and the bill came in just shy of £5000:eek: Main dealer prices I know.

I must be the luckiest (kiss of death) LR driver around because all my RR's have been relatively trouble free. A PITA sometimes but nothing that would tempt me to the (Japanese) dark side.

Give em a good soaking for a couple weeks get a long extension bar preferable a hi tension one and air gun the fecker !!!

Heck, you know how to put someone off you lot. I always wanted a Defender too but, for the available funds, the Range Rover was more car for my money. Maybe I should have just set my sights lower down the Defender range... :) Hindsight and all....

Datatek.

I understand completely.

Best wishes, for the weekend. Just got mine ready as possible (for a RR) for winter also.

regards.

I should give you the number of my Landcruiser owning mate - he's on his 3rd head and 5th head gasket - you'll feel better afterwards.

My Hilux Surf went through 2 head gaskets, one head (it absolutely ruined itself, 5 cracks so big you could see them with the naked eye), a turbo, all bushes, two sets of rear dampers one set of front dampers, tie rods, a propshaft and the final nail in the head was its last MoT Test where it'd need about 2k worth of suspension work again as the coils were shafted, one front damper had sprung a leak and wishbones needed replacing. All in the 5 years it had been in the UK.

Plus it constantly had an oil leak, no matter what you did to try and stop it, fix one leak a new one developed. Was a piece of turd. I'd never buy another one.

It was also the most unrefined vehicle I'd ever travelled in, it made Defenders feel like luxury. The suspension had two settings, rock hard or softer than the trots. The steering angle was so poor QE2 could out manoeuvre it, the road noise was deafening, the seats were poorly designed and couldn't be used for long trips. Was a shame as I really wanted to like it as it looked cool. But my Range Rover has been more reliable in the first year of ownership than the Surf.

You could argue the suspension problems were down to the environment where it was used, but my RR was used in the same environment without any issues.

I've seen cracks that you could see if you looked closely, but these were big, the largest was wide enough to slide a credit card through. But ruined heads were a common fault with the 2.4TD. I got a brand new 2.8 head shipped over from Toyota as it was the official fix to the head failure problem.
