Hi chappies!

Bessie had a ride on the back of a flat bed A.A. truck last weekend, and having stripped off the drum, angle ground off the two hub nuts, I see she's fairly fooked in the bearing department...in fact looking at the images, I think you'll see she hasn't one at all. :(

This could be why she's always kinda pulled to the right. :eek:

I've had her since April, and I'm now wondering if the bearing has been shot so long, that the drive shaft has ground down the drive shaft sleeve thingy. Maybe you can see that from the images.

The shiny swivel ball on that side is well rusty so I'm thinking I'll need to rebuild the whole dam thing!

I can't find a bearing sleeve, or is it a stub axle, on Paddocks, but I'd welcome any thoughts you have on what is the best course of action.

I'll speak to my pal, who's helping me, so I'll let you know the outcome.

I don't suppose it's gunna be easy?

The part round the drive shaft is quite worn at the top, as it's been bearing the load instead of the bearing. Getting the new bits back on that I reckon is fairly hopeless as the threads are fooked.

That's the stub axle ordered from Craddocks.

I'm gunna do the shiny ball too, Paddocks do a kit so I take it that will have all the bits I need?

BTW your top spring is on wrong and this will cause your shoe not to sit correctly.
The spring should go from post on back plate to post on leading shoe (not hole as you have it) and behind the ajust cam (between cam and back plate).
 
the paddocks kit has everything you need i did it on my S3 at the end of last month, make sure you order the correct one early axles (steeing arm on top) are diferent to later axles (steering arms on bottom)
 
Aaaaahhh...that's useful.

If I'd done something similar on the back wheels, would that cause them to bind slightly?

I'm posting a reply to thank you, the contributors, for your advice. My darling Bessie is enjoying normal (wobbly and wandering) steering like any other series, I gather.

It was quite a job. New bits were ordered over the past 3 weeks. If anyone is ordering the swivel kit from paddock, be sure and add in the metal oil seal retainer ring, as it's not included.

So, everything that bolts from on from the axle out to the split pin has been replaced, or cleaned, and greased!
