I think I need a new battery,

I bought a Hankook one with 4 years warranty and after 4 1/2 years it seems to struggle to hold charge.
I put my old LR one from the Freelander on today and noticed that the terminal gets warm after starting up and running for a few minutes, I cleaned them up very thoroughly when fitting the "new" battery.

I have used Boch batteries in the past and they seem good, but there are a few suppliers out there and I wondered if anyone has used a really good one lately ?

Got mine from TAYNA, think they are in north wales. Good selection to choose from. Delivered mine next day, but the current "situation" might affect deliveries? I got a Varta battery, same make as JLR fitted when new, but I got a 95aH compared to the original 90aH.

Tayna are great. Iv had my NUMAX battery in for 10 years.

Check your charging voltage aswell to make sure its not under or over charging. 4 years isn't very long for a battery. Tho cheap one can only last that long.

If you charge your battery is it alright then for awhile? I find with short journeys especially in the winter that it gets abit weak and needs up from a battery charger.

Hope you get sorted. Cheers Steve

Halfords with discount card, Yuasa range.

Tayna pants, bought battery (mail order) battery (Exide) went weak after 18mths or so, contacted tayna, they replied I would have to send them the battery for testing, and if they charged it and it tested okay I would be responsible for return postage.

So thats car vor
Me wrapping and finding a courier to transport a battery
Car still vor as I wait for outcome
Then they tell me its okay, and I have to cough up money
Cat still vor
Eventually get battery back, and it slowly dies

I deal with batteries all the time at work, and know when they are on their way out

Halfords, drive there and get it sorted

Thanks for the response, the battery I put on today is a LR original from my fl2 its about 10 years old and still working says Exide on it.
I was surprised that the positive terminal was quite warm when I ran it for about 15 minutes, so I took it for a run, went a few miles without stopping the engine and then left it ticking over while i checked the battery, the + terminal was too hot to touch.
Either the alternator is over charging, or there is a high load on the lead which goes to the fuse box under the drivers seat, this was warm after tick over.
Ordered a clamp ammeter and will investigate the circuits fed by the drivers seat box.
I also have an old discovery alternator and I may try to overhaul that.
Anyone ever done one?

+1 for Yuasa 5yr batteries. I have one on the Subaru Forester, bought 6 years ago and still as strong as an Ox. Will be buying a new Yuasa for the D90 when she's ready to go back on the road. The other good point about Halfords...they really do uphold their warranties and often it's a no quibble straight swap for a new replacement part; job done.

There's only a small number of battery manufacturers around the world, as such, most are the same internals with a different level on the front

+1 on getting a battery locally.... I've just replaced two 096's on a tractor with Yuasa's. From the local motor spares place - 5 year new for old replacement warranty.

The other issue I have with Tayna is they often recommend a battery which is, IMO, the wrong one - For instance, D1 300Tdi gets a £70 54Ah 540CCA battery !! = waste of time IMO. Far better to spend a £100 and get a 95Ah 1000CCA - so watch the battery spec....

I've seen the warranty story a few times, they give a big warranty but then if you claim they ask you to ship it so they can test and if they say it's ok then they ask you to pay to return it to you
I may look closer to home yusa, bosch, or varta were my pick, but my FL2 had a land rover battery which hax Exide clearly marked on it, and it's over 10 years old, fading a bit now but still impressive

If the pos terminal is to hot to touch, I would say you have an issue that could turn serious, and would find out whats wrong first.
Cheap multimeter will tell you charge voltage.
Battery would be my first suspect, especially at 10yrs old.

I am not top of the class with auto electrics but spent the day investigating this,
I cried out for help and made a new thread about the problem here.

Tayna...

And get yourself a Numax ;)

I had one of them on the 90, read loads, best thing ever, so bought one, fitted it was not impressed, always felt like it was on the edge of keeling over.
In the time the battery was on I rebuilt the starter, no different, another good bosch starter stripped and checked, again no different, new starter little better but not a lot, even tried new alternator as even though volts were good was not convinced again no different, after 3 years new battery and lo and behold we are good to go

Guess where i bought the original Numax from!
