just bought a 99 2.0 xdi freelander ,i was getting some whining noise from what sounded like the final drive unit ,after inspection found that there was no oil in it so i refilled and the noise was greatly reduced. that was yesterday.today i have driven to the shops about 10 miles and on my return there was a loud bang and then about every 2-5 seconds a bang like the sound of a hammer hitting a scaffold pole from the rear. looking at the final drive unit it appears to be leaking oil slightly. please help but i think it sounds expensive alex

Dose sound a bit drastic!
I think if you take off the front propshaft it should give you an idea if its the rear diff, VCU or the IRD unit.
Have a search on here for more info on all three.
