On my series 3 the ball joints on the track rod and steering tube have the nuts pointing down, on pictures I've seen and in the Haynes manual they are pointing up, what's going on, doesn't look like they can go the 'correct' way... What's going on??

The ball joints are tapered - you cant get them in the wrong way.
wheel to wheel they are nut down, steering relay(up) to NS wheel (down).
I know in my haynes it dows a diagram with them all nut up - but is just a guide, not a literal diagram.

Weren't the ones on series 2 nut up? They were changed to help keep the water out, I thought?
Seems unlikely - I don't think anyone considered keeping water out of a Land rover.. it just leaks out at the same rate it leaks in !
But they may have changed them at some point :)

Did early landrovers not have the steering arm attached to the top of the swivel?
Series 1 did not have Railco bush in swivel was a bearing top and bottom with a spring for tension.
