Besides the disco 1 axle having swivel joints and the disco 2 having the ball joint knuckles is there any other diffirences between the axles?
Is there any advantage of the newer d2 version? Eg strength? As far as I can see it just introduces perishables in the seals and ball joints. Whereas swivels the only downside I can see is the chrome ones chipping and rusting. And hence ruining the seal. The newer black ones avoid this though. Could you swap and say reassemble a D2 axle with swivels? Or put the D2 version on a defender?
Would the axles also swap over to a defender or have diffirent mounts? I know the diff outputs would need changing but is that all?
Mostly just curious but couldn't find much info on it on the net. The thought occurred as all the ball joints were advisory on mot so was looking at changing and basically have to strip the wheel assembly to swap them
Cheers

teflon coated ball still wear and rust
the d2 is a better axle but its main advantage is wider track, diff is the same as defender

Do the d1 axels sit closer in then as a defender one?
Surely ball joints fall more often than a Teflon ball though? I suppose you'd be limited by the swivel though so can' make the joints as strong?
By outputs I meant the flanges are diffirent holes but that's not much to swap.
I'm surprised no one's tried fitting the D2 style to a defender if they're much better

ball joints need changing once in a vehicle life though most dont notice they are worn
same holes t box end on d is larger pcd because of the double cardan
they are wider track so people that want that have otherwise theres no real point as youd need to do rear too and why the extra work

Made me think cos when my D2 starts getting more bag of bits than car I was thinking of buying another defender and using it as donor to rebuild so what bits could use.
Thanks for info James as always very enlightening!

in which case id use the full running gear and defender body work chassis could reasonably altered to suit

What use the disco chassis? It's actually in really good condition underneath
Would you be able to use the disco chassis and defender body though? Surely it would be hard to classify it since its basically two cars bolted together

i was thinking defender but theres no reason why d2 cant be altered def chassis out riggers ,rear cross member etc can be fitted

Oh you meant alter a defender chassis for disco 2 axles? Are the fixing much diffirent?
I know one person who used a disco chassis for a defender 100" build and just made a custom rear body but he worked at nene overland
I need a house with a bigger garden and garage for all these things :p too much on the go never any space!
