Awnings without roof racks

Anyone ever fitted an awning straight to their vehicle without using a roof rack ?

Thinking of putting a fiama or similar straight onto side of a d1- maybe spacing out to avoid alpine window

just wondered if anyone done it before

you can buy awning channel from caravan shops so that you can slide an awning into it
(not done it myself but read about it)

I used the above. but I have a roll cage.

The biggest question is what to fix it to. If you dont mind drilling into your bodywork, you could just fix it to that using spreader plates inside and out. It would be ugly though.

the awning rail can be fixed with self tappers so it shouldn't be too awful.

Im pretty sure that would rip out. It should be bolted to make a good job of it.

Just thought, you could also use a pair of roof bars. This would also make the awning option demountable and open up your options on awning make/type

could you mount roof rack brackets to the back of the awning rail?

Am not sure exactly what you mean.

Foxwing have a range of brackets to fit different racks/bars.

The back of the Foxwing is an extruded Ali plate with twin 'T' slots running down it. 8 mm boltheads will slide down the 'T' channel.

Have fitted Foxwings to various roof bars, to the luggage uprights on Patriot racks, sandwiched the luggage rail of other racks between the Foxwing and a fixing bracket.

Saw a 110 roof rack and it looked like it might have clamped to drip edge running the length of the cab. something like that ?

I do not think it would work just clamped to the rain gutter on one side of the vehicle .

Reason being that I think the leverage on the gutter clamps would be too high.

Most awnings will come with gutter mount clips, these are pretty good although you will have a gap between vehicle and awning so can get cold, windy and wet by the door. You can also get suction mounts for the roof, cheap ones are crap but good ones are very strong although pricey. Awning rail is your best bet, screws straight to the roof and can be fitted inside the gutter if wanted to, this provides the best seal for an awning and is what I use on camper vans, keeps heat in, drafts and water out...
