I have just replaced my bottom crank pulley, and cannot find any way of getting the long belt back on??
I have struggled to get a diagram for belt route but have got a similar one..I think
Anyway i have tried everything and still end up with a foot of spare belt,ie belt is still far too long
Its the one that came off by the way so is the right one.....Any Help would be much appreciated, please

Don't know if this helps but is the tensioner for the long belt not spring loaded ? as far as I know that should take up the tension

Thanks, I have screen shot the vid and will try again, I see from the vid the pulleys are in different places
from the diagrams maybe my problem...Yes the tensioner is spring loaded but as I say the belt just seems too long
so have not got to that bit yet. I have gone around the outside of all four driven pulleys and inside the idler and the tensioner
Missing something here.

The belt is in a kind of figure of eight - across the top of the water pump and pas pump, then in around the tensioner and out to the crank pulley then out to the alternator then in to the idler

Have you got a photo or drawing of the route of how you’ve fitted the belt?

Yeh that's what I have done sorry no pics at the moment.

Start from the top and route the belt as per photo's below making sure it goes over the pulley last, a long aviation spanner helps holding back the tensioner

Well no luck at all , it's not just me I have two mechanics and a further two mates and we are all baffled
even had my mate take a look and he is a John Deere service engineer, not even close still miles too long
Can anyone comment on the Freelander 2 diesel autos are they a step up from the Freelander 1
I Do fancy one,
Think this thing will end up getting picked up with the Tractor and dropped in the scrap bin.

Might be worth buying a new belt correct to car and trying again

Seems crazy to scrap a car for a drive belt which costs under a tenner

We have to ask at this point that you have fitted the correct crank pulley and have the right belt for your engine. Where did you buy them?

yes pulley was identical, I matched them up before fitting, and the belt is the one that came off the car
looked near new, the smaller air con belt has some perishing, so I have a new one, that's a doddle to fit
been working o landrovers for 35 yrs and this really is a mystery, thanks for your comments Guys

Me thinks you have put the belt down and picked up another one. No belt can be that difficult that umpteen mechanics can't fit it!
Wait a moement! There is a joke in there somewhere. "How many mechanics does it take to replace a timing belt on a TD4??"

HI Gary.
Either the belt is the wrong one but if you have fitted the right crank pulley & you are using the belt that came off then the only other fault is in the routing system double check it to make sure.

Thanks arctic, Best picture, and diagram I have seen so far, I took the belt off and put it in the footwell
So there is no way it's the wrong belt, as I say it came off that car, before I took it off I had a look around
up there to see the layout of the pulleys and was amazed at its length for such a small engine when i pulled it off.
looking at the diagram you kindly sent, with my 30 odd years of working on trucks and tractors, there is not a way of getting the route
wrong,as im sure you know, the belt must enter each pulley from the outside then pulled across the top by the idler and the tensioner
to give max contact with each pulley, so there we are mate...I will not give up will try again sat morning, but once I have it up and running i think it will have to go,Im looking at freelander 2 and disco 2 as we speak, I will have to do the front D bushes on the old freelander aswell before i can sell it,that looks a bugger of a job aswell
