I have a 2004 V8 4litre ESi discovery which i bought whilst working in Dubai and imported into the UK last year. It has only done 16k miles but when I drove it a few days ago the auto gear box would not select 1st gear even when I manually shifted the lever. It just pulled away vey very slowly even with my foot to the floor. Once it was up to speed it was ok but again on slowing down to roundabouts etc it was again a problem to pull away.
I had parked it on a slope prior to that (right to left slope not a hill).
Could it be that the fluid level in the auto gear box is just low and if so how do I check it ? It is not the same as the engine oil is it ?
When I had parked it on the flat and used it yesterday the gearbox worked fine, any ideas ?

gearbox oil (ATF) needs to be checked on a level place from col.

start the engine, run the gearbox through all the gears and back to park

pull out the dipstick drivers side near the firewall and it is red...(might be in a different place on yours)

wipe and replace then pull out and see where oil comes up to, shoudl be between the two marks.

If oil is low top up, if it is not bright red then probably worth changing it

Good advice that.
The oil can have a bit of a 'cooked' smell to it as well.
It is important to refill with the correct grade of ATF - there are many different types.
I think ATF type D is what yours will need.
Some say it is a good idea to change the filter screen in the gearbox too.
Mixed opinions here, some say they have problems with bits of crud being dislodged and going into valves as a result of changing the filter screen - others say they have done this with no problems.
My advice to you is that if you are unsure, seek expert advice from a specialist.
Funny things are modern auto gearboxes.

Could it be that you were in emergency mode? If the electronics detect a fault they stick the box in third, so you get the sluggish start you describe. If it happens you get a green flashing light on the instrument panel. Mine does this sometimes if I shift into gear very quickly after starting. Switching off and on again clears it.

Didn't think D2 autos had a dip stick.

no idea, never opened the bonnet of a D2... seems a little odd not to have one.. how would you know how much to put in?

Neither have I, but I do read a few Disco & RR forums. :D

The later P38s and the Disco IIs don't have dipsticks on the autobox, instead on the front face of the sump they have a filler level plug.

The fill proceedure is first to put the transfer case in neutral so theres no load, fill with oil until the oil overflows, autobox in N, start the engine, it will suck all the oil up so you need to pump like crazy to top it back up until it overflows again, put the transfer case in high and move the shifter up and down the gate a few times, a few seconds in each position, check level, the engine revs should now drop when you shift from N to D as it takes up load, plug in, test drive, check level, engine running in N. :)
