Hi

I have a standard Freelander cassette head unit connected to a standard autochanger under the driver's seat. I want to replace the head unit with something more interesting looking (maybe a DVD).

Anyone know what head unit manufacturers the standard changer is likely to be compatible with?

Cheers

Rog

I had a philips head unit and changer in my disco. For about £100 I got a Sony unit that is a CD Radio, plays Cds with MP3/ Wav etc and also has a removable front that can be hooked up to the PC and used like a 1Gb Mp3 player which means approx 500 songs so who needs disk changers? It also kicks out 52W RMS x4 and has RCA outputs and inputs for subs etc. I think it even has a connection for a changer but I want going to bother getting a cable specially for it.

Rev, that sound a cracking head unit, could you dig out the model number for us? I fancy that one!

Rog,
The Older standard heads are Phillips, and the changers are Alpine, if memory serves me right....;)

Mine's a late 2002 model - Any idea if that makes it newer or older? I can't find any useful markings on the changer but the head unit it the black one with the radio display on the head unit (and not with the clock).

Cheers

Ayup Rog,
Just found ya some more info, the post 2001 head units are made by VDO, see this, is this the right one? eBay.co.uk: Freelander head Unit 2001 (item 290116010739 end time 12-Jun-07 16:57:58 BST)

otherwise its the Phillips R770 eBay.co.uk: ***GENUINE LANDROVER FREELANDER R770 RADIO*** (item 280119573317 end time 31-May-07 13:53:45 BST)

Also for info, heres the CD changer eBay.co.uk: LANDROVER FREELANDER 6 DISC CD CHANGER PACKAGE (C42) (item 260120382977 end time 30-May-07 17:46:12 BST)
I haven't any more on what head units fit the changer, itmay also be worth having a search on the disco forum, as they used the same changer/head.

Regards,

I got this one from Argos about a month ago for £115. Reduced from £230. Its not there now unless its in the catalogue. But this is thje actual item from somewhere else sony

Having got this one I think that the ones with bluetooth offer even more and you can get them quite reasonably. Ie you could play music from your phone or even use it as a handsfree (not 100% sure on that one) Anyway I am really chuffed with my Sony and if you can get one for £100 ish you would be getting a good deal.

If you have the Philips RC026 CD changer then this will also work with any D2B compatible head unit. (Philips, Grundig, Alpine, Seimens VDO,)

If your CD changer has a green eject button then it is an Alpine type and will only work with Alpine Head Units. You will find like I did that aftermarket Alpine Head Units use different connectors (some DIN plug type).

I wanted to change my head unit and retain the CD changer so I got myself an OE head unit (but much better spec) (Sat nav etc)

The cd changer works perfectly and I get great sound. I have decided to sell the unit - follow the link in my signature.

Regards,

Steve

Yes, the Bluetooth ones do allow you to use them as a handsfree... it's my next buy...

...once I've paid for a new sunroof mechanism, sorted out a whirring sound coming from the front left side when driving, put new shocks on the front end, sorted out the drivers side rear window... and so much more!

When mine's back from the dealer (hopefully tomorrow) I will have a look at the changer for the green button. I am not against an Alpine head unit so it will suit me either way.

Cheers for the advice

No probs matey.

Just have a look at the connections before you buy as I had an alpine HU that used a CHM-S140??? CD changer. It was not compatible with the freelander one and the plugs were totally different. Im guessing you have the alpine with small black rectangular plug whereas the aftermarkets are round DIN Plug type. (Like those found on old radiograms!!)
