Hi I’m new to this forum and wondering if somebody can help me. My Auto Gearbox on my Freelander 2 SD4 is fried. I’m just wondering if the part numbers for the gearbox are different or are they all the same for the auto? Also, the garage doing the work have told me it will be £2800 to supply and fit for me, whereas I could find one for a few hundred and have them fit it for a lot less. Is it too risky? Thanks.

Hi,

First what was the issue ? automatic gearbox can be repaired ...

For the garage, without knowing if It is a new gearbox or a refubished one … but it’s a gearbox change price after all.

If you get a second hand one, depending from where It is sourced, if It is from a low mileage car. You need to found a garage that want to do the job, and will be certainly at your own risks, without any waranty …

Originally I took my car in due to it not engaging any gears properly and then eventually would barely move at all. They told me there were 2 new cooler pipes leading to the gearbox that had not been tightened properly (my guess is previous owner had work done). So they said they can reseal the pipes and flush the oil and then put new oil in it, but it may not fix the issue if the oil had been leaking for a while and it could have possibly damaged the gearbox. Now the car is only engaging 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear before dropping into neutral.

Hi

Does the gearbox oil has been changed ?
Does the gearbox codes has been read ?

According to the price for the gearbox change, it’s most certaintly a refubished one, or a exchange one.

They told me they done diagnostics and changed the oil. The codes I got using Carista before I took it in are on the pic below

Hi,

You should look how much time waranty they gives you for the job.
Unless you find a gearbox specialist who can check the gearbox, do some repairs or renew solenoids, you are stuck.

For the oil change, it's complicated to do the change without the right tooling ( unless you do 3 or 4 oil change in the row).
Can you move the car ? If not it's complicated ... to find an other garage ...

Regards

Hi,

The place I took it to is a gearbox specialist but after resealing the tubes and flushing oil to fill with fresh oil and it’s still not worked. They said it must be fried internally. I can go from 1st-3rd gear fine, soon as it hits 4th gear it drops into neutral. I’m torn on whether to buy a used gearbox for a lot less which I will get warranty with, but I will not get warranty for the labour required to do the work on it.
