Auto gearbox oil change

Anyone who has changed the gearbox oil...
How much oil did it took?
Just changed mine and it only took 3,5L.
The workshop manual says the total capacity is 10L! I'm a bit worried...

You should have got 4.5 to 5 litres out, the rest is trapped in the torque converter. Change once and change a gain in a few hundred miles.

True, I didn't drain 10L as well but that's one of the reasons why I wanted to change the oil anyway, I didn't know if the oil was at the level. I haven't drained 5L even...
So I thought my oil was pretty low. Got a bit surprised when after 3,5L it starts spilling it out.
Will it ever drain the full 10L?

Unless you use a pump, you cannot fully drain the box.
You must use the correct procedure when re-filling, engine cold, fill until oil ruins out or is up to the mark on the dipstick, start engine and move slowly through all gears then back to neutral, carry on filling until the oil comes out of the filler hole or to the full mark on the dipstick, put filler plug in, stop engine.

That's how I did, exactly how it's written in the workshop manual.
Still a bit worried though. What symptoms should I be looking for in case the gearbox oil is low? Poor shifting? Jerking? Revving?

If you think of a slipping clutch on a manual you'll get the idea.

Stick a litre of Lucas Transmission Fix in, it worked wonders on my auto box.

I got 10L of ACDelco Type III... I used it as well for the transfer box previously.
So far so good.
I'll do as you said before and change it again in a few hundred miles. Still have 6,5L left...

No don't think so....was just right when checked on cold idle as you said ...was very very thin compared to the new atf tho ...

What is the new ATF? Should be Dexron IId or Dexron III. It's normally very thin.

Dex 3....you wouldn't believe how thin the old stuff was bruvver. ..my fluid change has restored power back but jerking still...I lost loads of power in a few weeks...was like a vw camper before..now it's like a 4x4 lol

OK, so the old oil was totally fecked

The flaring on shifts or jerky changes will be due to the valves sticking, Lucas will probably fix it eventually, but it will need a few good long runs and maybe more than one dose of Lucas to fix it. Mine has steadily got better over time and is now almost perfect with just the occasional hard shift. I've done 3 changes with Lucas each time, going to do a 4th change soon again with Lucas. Easier and cheaper than swapping the box

Oil should be changed every 24K miles but rarely gets done by stealers.

To be brutal ...my previous owner didn't service nothing and if he did...it was bodged instead of done by the book..finding it hard to source lucas brand other than flee bay
.so going to try wynns and a long run today..and save up for some atf for 2 weeks time...joys of having been signed off work= no money

Wynns doesn't work in my experience. Lucas is from Ebay. Sorry to hear you have no job, joys of my being retired means not a lot of cash all the time

I won't waste my money on wynns ...thanks u saved 5.99 today to which I'll buy my daughter something lol ..does it take a few hundred miles for the fluid to total mix thru system or can I just call up gears in low ratio for big hills and normal ratio during my drive to mix it up and then I'll do a quick fluid drop today ...just want this jerking gone QuickTime before Mrs calls a Holt to my spending on it &#55357;&#56839;&#55357;&#56839;&#55357;&#56839;&#55357;&#56839;

I use the gear stick a lot for holding 3rd up slopes for example and for engine braking. The more you exercise the valve block, the sooner it frees off. When mine was really bad, I used the gear stick like it was a manual, backing off the throttle then moving the lever for the shift, stopped all the jerking as a temporary measure.
