I cant help the the hippo doctors will be along shortly:).

Do you have service history and when was the gearbox oil last changed and what mileage is the car?

These may help the Doctors diagnosis where to start:).

Welcome though:).

The car has just turned 97000 I have receipts covering the period from new although not sure if I have every one. The last service was done at 91000 it says all ok after service. I am the 3rd owner I am wondering if the car may need the gearbox oil changing and hopefully that would cure the problem? Cheers.

First thing to do is check the service history to see if the gearbox fluid has been changed. LR say 150k miles or 10 years, both of which are 3 X too long.
The box itself wants fresh fluid every 50k miles or 4 years, if it's going to survive to the 150k official service interval.

So if its not had the box fluid changed, get it done.

Also have the Haldex serviced, the rear diff oil changed, and the PTU oil too, otherwise those components will likely fail before the 150k service interval.

Thanks Nodge sounds expensive but will look into getting what you advised done. Going to see if there are any good independent garages near me to get this done I live in the Loughborough area if anyone knows of a good garage in my area any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you checked the price of a gearbox or any of the other component's listed by the Doc @Nodge68

Start with the gearbox and budget soonest for the rest, Can you DIY?

Getting all these vital drive line components serviced regularly will help keep them working correctly.
Not doing so will land you with a bill orders of magnitude greater than the servicing costs alone.
You have to remember that your Freelander was a £35,000 car when new, so will come with reasonably expensive maintenance, but not maintaining it properly will land you with really high repair bills .

Thanks Nodge it's going in for gearbox oil change and inspection on the other items on Tuesday at a auto specialist nr me that comes highly recommended hopefully all will be ok thanks for your help cheers mate.

Let us know how it goes.
Also get the other components serviced ASAP, the PTU, Haldex and rear diff, are known to give expensive issues due to lack of timely maintenance.
