Hi,

Having sold my 300tdi and purchased myself a 2003 disco i have had to have a new tow bar fitted.

The company fitting the tow bar suggested that i have an automatic gearbox oil cooler fitted. Apparently it helps when towing.

The towbar company don't sell them and he couldn't tell me any more, just passing on what he had heard.

Any more info guys / gals. Are they worth having, are they easy to fit to a TD5 or do you need to be mechanic? Where from and how much ?

Your going to tell me now that a TD5 comes with one as standard

Thanks

Mark

Also standard on an auto D1 disco. I beleve it's standard on a D2 as I have read various posts on D2 auto box coolers On a D1 it's located behind the front grill and infront of the rad, it's round with fins and looks a bit like a "bottle brush" ,,

Regards

as far as I am aware it should have a gearbox oil cooler

the following is taken from the rave CD

The bottom four rows of the lower radiator are dedicated to the fuel cooler. The upper of the two connections at the bottom of the radiator receives coolant from the oil cooler. This is fed through the four rows of the lower radiator in a dual pass and emerges at the lower connection. The dual pass lowers the coolant temperature by up to 24C before being passed to the fuel cooler.
Two smaller radiators are located in front of the cooling radiator. The upper radiator is the intercooler for the air intake system and the lower radiator provides cooling of the gearbox oil.

+AUTOMATIC GEARBOX - ZF4HP22 - 24, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION, Description.

Transmission fluid from the gearbox is circulated through a cooler attached to the front of the radiator. Quick release connectors on the transmission fluid lines attach to connections on each end tank of the cooler. A temperature sensor on the RH end tank provides the instrument pack with an input of transmission fluid temperature. If the temperature exceeds a preset limit, the instrument pack illuminates the transmission temperature warning lamp. The warning lamp remains illuminated until the temperature of the fluid returns within limits.

see also attached diagrams of the system

have you got the rave CD ? - if not download it from here - very useful

iirc Kenlowe recommend fitting a second cooler in front of the rad as apposed to behind it, however this would mean having two gearbox coolers. thats got to be overkill?

Any idea where I would find out more about fitting a second ? As I do a lot of heavy towing

Thanks all for the input.

Hi, any auto trans repair facility should be able to supply you with a trans cooler, they are built a lot lighter than a engine oil cooler as the pressure requirement is a lot lower,
When you say you are intending to do a lot of heavy towing are you intending to be in a very hilly environment, as they dont build heat up much once you are over TC lockup speed.
They also have a radiator heat exchanger in line as well as the extra cooler.
I never had any probs towing a 2 ton caravan thru OZ with a V8 rangie in 40+C temps .
The only thing I did was to change to full syhthetic auto trans fluid.

I never had a problem with my 300tdi auto so I think I'll do some towing and assess it again in the future.

Many thanks for your help.
