Hi all, I have drained the trans fluid from my 300Tdi and when I have come to refil it, I can't get a level.
At first I thought I had over filled it because the fluid was well up the dipstick, so I let some out via the dipstick lower fitting. Then I started and it all disappeared, so I put some more in and it is either well up the dipstick or nonexistent???
I know it is to be checked at idle when cold and after it has been cycled through the years but I can't make head nor tail of it.
What level if any do you have on the dipstick before start? Or should I just rain it again and start with a measured 4.5 litres?

You should put in four litres then start engine and move box through gears place in park. With engine running dip and top up until fluid is at max line.

If it helps I have just checked mine, it's not been started today, and cold with engine off, (not started today) it measured 14cm on the dip stick.
The difficult bit is knowing what is in yours now. From experience, if you drained it properly, then the max that would have come out is 'I think 3 litres' so that is what you would put back in.
If you did not get a reading, then you might not have put enough back in.
I think the difference from no reading to full is only something like 200ml.
Hope this helps.

I don't think this is an easy level to check. I take the dip stick out before I start the engine, and let it idle for a moment, take it through the gears and then put in the dipstcik to take a level. I have come to think the oil tends to stay in the tube, and can even be pulled up the tube by the withdrawing dipstick, giving a misleading reading. Without the stick in place the oil level can more easily take the correct level.

For clarity. Oil capacity of ZF 4 from empty is 9.1 litres. Max you will drain is 4 to 5 litres. Drain and fill with 3.5 to 4 litres then run engine move through gears and dip and top up until fluid level reaches top mark on stick. Simples. Nothing hard about it.

But you would think so reading this thread :D

Think there are those who like to make a meal of a simple operation. Basically for simplicity. Drain, replace drain plug. Top up until fluid appears on dip stick between minimum and maximum levels. Start engine. Run through gears a couple of times. Re dip and top up bit by bit until fluid is at max level. Replace dipstick. Stop engine. Replace cap on TQF tin. Make a brew. :D:D

That is all well and good but I am finding that filling through the dipstick results in fluid staying in the tube and giving a false reading.
