Got myself a Series 2 Disco a couple of weeks ago, having previously had a Series 1 (200tdi Manual) some time ago. My other car (a Toyota Previa) is an automatic and the second we've had, so I'm not unfamiliar with driving an automatic, but the Disco is giving me some cause for concern. It may just be the idiosyncracies of the mating of an automatic gearbox to the TD5 engine, I don't know, but there are a couple of issues:

Firstly, there's a rough spot in the rev range between 2000 and 2500 rpm. When I say, 'rough spot', I mean it's like driving over corrugated iron! It happens most in top gear, around 55-65mph. If I knock it down to third and accelerate through to 70mph before knocking it back into Drive, it smoothes it out a bit, but is it 'normal' or a misfire?

Secondly, on odd occasions when first setting off, there's almost zero throttle response for a few seconds, before the gearbox wakes up and it selects first gear, which is accompanied by a slight squeal. Again, 'normal' or a problem?

Thirdly, I can't select low range for love nor money. I note in the manual it talks about having difficulty selecting low range and gives advice, but nothing's working. It does occur to me that the previous owner may never have taken the vehicle off-road and therefore never needed to bother with the transfer box, but I have been doing a bit of gentle green laning and I'd like to be able to use low range.

Advice welcome.

Ive done a few like this - changing the gearbox oil can make a huge difference.

re the "rough spot" - this could be the common misfire from oil in the engine loom - do a search on here, theres loads of info!

the low-range issue sounds like seized linkages - again, a search on here will tell you what to do!

One simple thing - High - Low on an auto the main box must be in Neutral - there is an interlock. If you're in Neutral, then I'd agree with stuck linkages.

On rough running on a TDi, could it be the oil in the injector harness problem?

Hi there, here are the votes from the French jury:

1. That sounds to me like gearbox and engine mounts are failing. Gearbox are easy and cheap to do - I get my stuff from Paddocks. The engine mounts are a little more expensive, about £50 from memory, but they make an enormous difference to the smoothness. On this occasion make sure you get LR engine mounts not cheapies;

2. Check your gearbox oil level - there is a special procedure for this!!

3. HI-Lo can only be operated if the autobox is in neutral.

à bientôt

TILT! OP said TD5 and due to lack of alcohol, I typed TDi. TD5 does have an injector harness which could get contaminated.

Sorry for the error, but comments on checking simple things still apply.

Cheers!
