AudiA4 vs SubaruForester

Hi there,
I want to buy a decent small SUV or stn. wagon.
After some research I narrowed the choice down to two models:
Audi Quattro A4 1.8T and Subaru Forester 2.5XT.
I had already test drives and I like both of them.
SubaruXT has more power but Audi has far better finishing/interior.
I have to make the final choice.

Could anyone share the opinion on any of these cars ?
Any data on reliability/maintenance/cost of use/fuel economy ?

The Audi would cost a fortune to repair when it breaks so it's outta the
question.

I'll admit to being biased, but I'd go for the Subaru myself. Of course
that's partly because I already own a Subaru Outback and have driven my
mother's Forester from time to time as well. Of course, you've presented
yourself with a tough choice...

Audis are nice, but almost... too nice. If I had a car like that I'd be
afraid of scuffing it up big time. Subies are more like a wash-and-wear
kind of car, you won't see me bursting into tears when the Outback gets hit
by a shopping cart. The dents make mine look different anyway.

I don't know anything about the Audi or price difference but I can tell
you the Forester would be hard to beat by anything in the "small SUV
class". I owned an '02 XS model, drove it about 20K mi. with absolutely
no problems, 19 mpg around town, 26 on the highway and the 165 hp was
good enough for me. I don't do any serious off-roading but it got me
anywhere I wanted to go and in comfort, loved it, comes loaded with
goodies, as I'm sure you know. So what did I do?, I traded it for a
2004, same XS model but with a few interior improvements, love it more.
I have not driven an XT as turbos do not interest me, nor does the
price. Subaru makes damned good machines!
