Are Freelanders now dropping in value.

Although its 40 years since I was a manager of a Car Auction, where of course I would put valuations on cars, I thought that Freelanders would only depreciate slowly, When I was recently renewing my insurance an online insurance company indicated that my Freelander (2013, 56,000 miles) was only worth £7000 but there was a facility to increase the insured value so I put it up to £10,000 and the insurance company refused to quote for itt.

On the Autotrader website there are a few 2013/14 Freelanders with less than 60.000 miles and all over £10,000. so why is it that insurance companies won't accept a realistic valuation.

Not sure about newer ones but the FL1 with issues is almost worthless, I have bought 3 now for 300 or less ranging from 1999 to 2004

Main reason I got a FL1 was cos it's cheap as chips. Got a tidy up-together hippo with 70k miles on the clock, ES model so most of the mod cons, leather seats, tidy and clean inside, and runs well. Most other cars to this standard are still worth almost double when I was looking around.

FL1s seem to be disappearing off the roads quite a bit now so I'd say give it time and values will start creeping up, mainly because they're an affordable way into LR ownership, and will remain fixable for the most part. FL2s, whilst loaded with gadgets and a much more refined vehicle may not have quite the same charm in time, and will be difficult to keep going with all that electrickery stuff going on. Just my thoughts there.

I'd love to get back onto the saddle, but frankly I cannot afford to maintain the upkeep costs.
With choice available, from series defender being explicit pornagraphic in value for a humble one. Your left with frankly dogs.

…I don’t know, compared to a lot of other options, the FL1 is not bad at all on RFL and insurance.
A looked-after td4 engine is good for lots of miles, and drivetrains can be brought up-to-spec again. LR have secured its longevity somewhat by making it a classic. Yes, you need to hunt down the ones that are worth the work.

Defenderers are, quite frankly, stupid money to buy in the first place. And I really don’t know why. Never looked at the insurance, but I imagine it’s loaded somewhat for the easy ‘nick-ability’ of said bone-rattler. Then of course, you need an industrial galvaniser at home to keep it going. And a skip to collect the very expensive but never-ending rust falling onto the driveway!

I agree about the FL2 - not so much of a ‘classic’ feel as they are much more modern in comparison to a 1. More like a disco, and quite a lot of them still about. But I do hope that we are able to keep them going for years to come yet. We’ll just have to brush-up on our elek-trickery gizmo-fixing skills. At least we don’t need to learn air suspension!
I’ve had half an eye open for an older, looked-after 2 to purchase for a while now.

Still a few 1’s round my way. We even wave at each other sometimes, or ‘beep’ as we pass. Ah, the little things in life

Pretty sure that "Classic" thing is just LR saying they will continue to flog the spare parts they couldn't flog before it was "Classic" status - which means the parts you want, they won't have or be restocking.

F1s have never been 'common' cars over here, so I've been waving at them since we got ours in 2010. I headed out last weekend to walk the dog, got the the end of the road and, wallop, an F1 parked up there



Thought we had a decent new neighbour. Alas no though, evidently it was just a visitor.

My son is looking to sell his FL1 TD4 HSE 5-door. (located in Milton Keynes)

Everything is working including the Air-con, heated seats (we replaced switches).
It's got a bypass on the HK amplifier (which never worked), and Pioneer head unit with Bluetooth, etc.
Electric folding door also working.
Turbo replaced couple of years ago.
Sunroof replaced with a good used assembly (de-rusted, repainted & replaced slide mechanism, plus no leaks anymore).
Prop is off at moment for new VCU bearings (VCU tested good). Will check UJ's at same time.
Headlining is also sitting in my garage, waiting for new material from Martrim in next few weeks.

Forgot these:
New front driveshafts, wishbones, rubber bushes everywhere, water pump & stat, crank pulley & idlers.

What do you guys think it's worth ?

.. probably about 25% of what he has spent on it !

In reality I suspect we've spent a lot less than many do. All the work has been done by Me & Son, so no big garage bills. He works in motor parts trade so we get good prices on parts.

I couldn't recommend doing your own work where possible, garage wanted £500! to do the lower control arm ball joint.

replaced all the joints with a new arm for £30. Ridiculous...

179,000 at MOT on 6th June. Haven't checked the body over recently, but can't remember any dents or damage. Might be a few age scuffs, but not really sure. I could get him to photo it if you're interested ?

Nah, not interested. I already have one. I was just musing over what the value might be based on your post asking exactly that for your son. There is an 05 TD4 auto HSE with 120k on it for sale near me for £1995 from a trader, so I would imagine it would be a fair bit less than that.
