Can anyine help me work out what modifications have been done to my td5, I'm trying to work out a problem eh an today I found these which appear to be tuning boxes. One is quite clearly labeled as a tunit, the other is just plain silver and I have no idea. I also have some kind of port that isn't connected to anything and another form of wiring connection too.

The reason I was checking was for oil at the red connection as my landy runs rough at high revs - ie anything above 70 mph in top on a 1.2 transfer box.

Any help is appreciated Thanks links to pics broken. Will be up asap

Take them off and get the ECU reset/updated.
Then you know you are starting with a good base ECU setting.
Mine was rough at higher RPM, see my other post.

Silver one looks like one of the boxes which lowers the pressure signal coming from the manifold and fools the ECU into thinking the boost pressure is lower. Allowing it to boost to a higher pressure before going into limp mode.

They grey/silver one is a boost box, allows the turbo to be run at higher PSI without limp mode. Check your wastegate actuator or get a boost gauge, you may have to turn the boost down.

The black box looks like a 'chip box' essentially a generic plug in remap.

I think mine has that taped bit not sure what it is though.

As mentioned take it all out carefully, then get to ECU reset at the dealers, should be about £120 or so. Start again from there, in the mean time don't rag it anywhere.

I would agree with both bankz5152, and Lightning's comments above, I had a chip box on mine it was one of the better ones but I like it more since I took it off and spent a bit of time getting the engine running better.
As above if you pull the sliver box of you may find the waste gate has been wound up too high and when the ECU sees the real boost signal it may go into limp mode, better to do a re set and check up if you take them both off. It might hep if you could get some help from someone with a Nanocom or similar.

The tunit looks like its adjustable.

Tuning boxes are not all bad, especially as you can remove them when selling the car and get some of your money back.

I had a tunit on a late 300 auto, it went well, then took it to jjfearn and got it remapped and larger cooler, it went a little better, by a little I mean just that, certainly not worth the money over the tunit unit.

I had a Dastek one on a td5 discovery, was pretty good, some time later again went for a custom remap, again sod all difference, tried multiple ecu chips from the tuner guy, none were much better.

Iirc the tunit has 7 wires, power and earth and 5 wires, one for each injector, as std they came with scotchlocks to break into the loom! maybe different on the later units?

Looks like a USB socket on one of those boxes. Maybe it's the sort where you can plug in a PC and adjust the variables. That multiplug that's wrapped in foam rubber seems to be present on a lot of TD5 looms, including mine. It's probably for something that the humble TD5 Defender doesn't have, but gets used on other vehicles which use the same generic loom.

gazman, How are you going to move forward having found the tuning boxes on your TD5.
Grey one a boost control box and the black one an adjustable tuning chip (plug and play type)

Yesterday I was thinking about removing them. But on reflection they appear well fitted and reading up on them I'm confident that they are a decent sized firm and offer these for lots of cars so no need to panic that its a chinese/ebay special. They have loads of fitting and running centers.
I had dropped the turbo boost by adjusting the wastegate using a bike pump and a pressure guage set up. It was set nearly 25 psi boost. I dropped it to 18 and confirmed this today with the boost guage I've fitted (it's about 17). I may take it back up to 20 or so. I tried the lower settings on the box today as it's set at its highest and it does make a difference. 1 is quite flat and seems to effect the throttle position as well, 5 is nice and smooth with a flatter power curve, the fuel pump sounds quieter too, and 9 is back where it was which is peaky and only requires a light throttle touch around town.
All settings still have a rough feeling at around 4k rpm so I'm going to fit a rev counter at some point incase I'm just over reving it. I'm also going to check that the exhaust manifold isn't blowing at higher revs and maybe get it to a rolling road as tunit the people who make the per box have them all over the country and one is 10 mins up the road.

If it were me l would put it back to standard and start from there.
Since l had my TD5 ECU reset at the dealers it runs much better, these engines perform well in standard tune if set up properly.
With the boost cranked right up and two tuning boxes fitted l'd have concerns about the head gasket/manifold/turbo etc.
What's the last owner tried to achieve turning the boost up to 25?
They should have bought a BMW X5 or Rangy Sport instead by the sound of it.
Maybe refit one of the tuning boxes....but see how it performs after the dealer ECU reset first. Mine is so much better (smoother and more lively) that l probably won't get the remap re-installed, as l am not sure it needs it.

What you have done appears to be good, with the waste gate adjusted and the turbo boost turned down I would remove the boost box "the grey one" it will be doing nothing now but "it is something to go wrong".

Well I've had a play with it again. I've set the boost to 18 psi with the overboost taking it to about 19. Enough that it is in the realms of near enough std and it is running like a dream. Lots of low down grunt and no silly boost pressures like it did have.
I'm not a thrasher anyway and given the big inter cooler and the fact it was working ok at much higher pressures I'm going to leave it be for the time being.
The wastegate was set originally with about 5 threads left, ive got it running about 10 to 11 now (standard is around 11) I did wind it as low as 16 but it really was flat to drive.

only glanced. I am wondering if the rough running at high revs is the manifold. I cant see behind the turbo cover as I cant remove it due to a siezed bolt but up to cyclinder four looks ok. Going to check the studs shortly.

At my parents and used a dental mirror to check, all studs and nuts are there, no signs of blowing either. A bit wet and oily by cylinder one but its blown from the front of the block by cylinder 1 but looks like its from the rocker cover and again by cylinder 5 but again looks to be oil from the cover.

I will remove the turbo heat guard and look properly but so far so good.

maybe its already been warped and skimmed? or the alisport intercooler is doing a good job or it is just a time bomb waiting to go.

Work commitments mean i'm not going to get chance to remove anything for the time being so I will have to leave everything where it is and keep and eye on it. after all its done over 5k miles in my hands without me knowing about any of this and done a few hundred miles in a day on motorways and loads of heavy towing. Plus the 20k miles the last owner did in it, as it was all done prior to him buying it. Maybe its just a tough old bus!
