Something better .. ;)

Seriously, check insurance first, it _can_ be hard to get for grey imports
... ;)

Cylinder head failure, is the only real 'problem' on the 2.4 diesel.

Other than that, just general condition. The ones I drove felt very
underpowered, and not overly refined, hence me going for a Pajero in the
end.

Don't be put off a 'grey' import, my Pajero is cheaper to insure than my old
xantia ;-)

Don't know of any surf clubs, but the Pajero club has a list of grey
friendly insurance companies, and import part specialists, so it may be
worth checking out, just for research.

A good vehicle if you buy the 3 litre turbo diesel (as said in another post
the 2.4 is underpowered). You have the usual reliability of a Toyota (I
drive a Landcruiser - one of my sons is onto his second Surf import)! Parts
are not a problem either!
John

The only drawback with this model

Yeah,

Rang 4 high street insurance companies, all were happy to quote.

It was a choice between Tesco ! or a smaller company called Bradgate, they
won as they knocked an extra 10% off for being a club member.

I beleive AON are even cheaper, and Liverpool Victoria are also worth a try.

Cheers.

John,

How would you compare/contrast the LC and Surf?

Mick

the Hilux Surf (4Runner) is gaining poularity in the UK. They're getting
quite a common sight nowadays. Our current advice is to go for the 3.0L
model if funds allow as the 2.4L has known problems with the cylinder head.
The only known 'cure' for which is replacement with a 'new design' 2.4L head
(C.£750). Obviously some imports will have already had this done back in
Japan under the general recall- but not all. It's pot luck I'm afraid- but
then we are talking about 11 year old cars!!

Vist the UK 'owners club' at http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/Forums/index.php? for
more info, heaps of technical knowledge, buying advice, off-road meetings
etc.

My perception, as a Landcruiser 90 owner is that the Surf is based on a
Hilux (a truck, which I like, but it's a truck), and a Landcruiser 90,
although useful off road has had a good deal of effort put into road
manners and comfort. I drove a couple of 4-Runners (the UK spec Surf?)
when I was looking for a LC I could afford, and wasn't that impressed
with it's road manners or interior ergonomics. It felt like a truck.
Funny that.

Hi All... Found the insurance really cheap, cheaper than my pug 406 infact
£100 cheaper. £285 fully comp.
