anybody re-tapped their manifold studs threads?

as it says has anybody retapped the threads for the exhaust manifold studs on their head? The single stud just above the turbo(akward one) is starting to strip.

i,ve slowly wound the stud into were its bitting but i aint tight, any more of ma mong strength and i knows going to happen!

anyone done this job wea out ####ing it up and if so how, its been a while since i,ve retapped owt!

Not done the holes in the head, but I had to drill & tap the exhaust manifold on my 110. The problem you will face, is that if you tap the existing holes they will be oversized, so the bolts will be lose. the best thing to do would be to drill the hole out and fit a Helicoil insert.

Helicoil inserts are brilliant ...

Be patient and use the right size drill bit--( which is listed on the side of the tap..) If you don't have the right size drill don't be lazy--
Go to the shop and get one..
If all else fails read the directions before you even start...

cheers fur the replies, wea have helicoils at work and tap and die sets.

My only proplem is i,ve done these jobs on big old bolts and threads on my larger toys at work (70 tonne armour) and so its allways steel and hard to #### up.

My wee 300tdi head is soft ali.....and i can be heavy handed...

wea the helicoils how do you snap off the end? surely yu,d be pushing ito the block? .....best get myself a depth measurement thing?

Helicoils are great but the last few that we have done we have been using insert rather than helicoils ! They tend not to Wind out with the bolt ! They are thin walled and go in nice and easy as well!!
It's just a different solution to an old problem !!!

I was in the tool store at work and found a Time Sert box with all the parts, so i think i,ll be giving that a go on tuesday, been googling it to death so lets see what happens ,

Used the Time Sert kit much better than helicoils and the thread insert aint going anywhere!

I've used nielsen heli-coil inserts before. come in a kit with the correct drill bit etc, and they're great, and for £10, really great! Had a 200tdi with one in the head (exhaust manifold), and three in the timing case!
