Any one know much about the 2.2TDci ford engine

My mate is looking at buying a 2013 2.2TDci defender.

Anyone know much about this engine? I’ll go with him and check over the standard stuff but anyone know any isues or things to look out for/ask specific to this engine? It’s a world away from my 200tdi
 
I think the standard body and corrosion issues would be more to worry about. Especially chassis and chassis on body contact points. Doors are much improved. The Ford Duratorque engine is excellent in my experience. I've had a ford for years now. My first Tdci engine was in a 2002 plate Focus. Unbelievable machine, the engine was solid and made the car exhilerating to drive. It was a flying machine which acted as though it was on rails when you drove it. Had separation anxiety when I traded it in for a 2007 plate 2.0Tdci Mondeo. Sold that and currently have a 2012 plate 2.0Tdci Mondeo. Bought it at 16.5K miles ex hire car. Now has 145k on it and runs like a sewing machine and still pulls like a train. It developed a CAN bus problem in the summer which has gone away for now. The Tdci engines had a software issue in the Transit vans, but don't think this manifested itself in other vehicles with the Tdci engine.
 
It seems from reading online comments (try the “engines” section of this forum) that this engine is OK if you get a good one.
 
I have a mate who does a lot of work on transit engines and he says it is a good unit but the operators simply do not service them when they should resulting in problems.
 
Agree with all the above, generally a good engine - but check oil has been changed at least annually / every 12500 miles, with fully synthetic oil. Check the coolant header tank for oil (oil cooler / filter housing seals known to fail). Intercooler and hoses are a weakness but easy to fix when they fail.
 
Thanks everyone. I'll check all the basics for him but sounds like it’s a reasonable engine. I'll give the vehicle a once over with him and report back
