Had my radiator changed to an ally 1 when my old one disolved about 12months ago. Since then my local indy. LR specialist has used Red (OAT) Antifreeze in my engine, previously I think I was on blue. Are any of the old seals or gaskets likly to suffer from the change or do I just keep going with red for the topups that appear essential nowadays.

I'm also still looking for a good way of testing my temp gauge as the garage tell me that the engine warms up OK but in this weather it can take 10mins of Mway driving to get it up to the bottom of the main section of the gauge (about as high as it ever gets) and idoling a bit before setting off doesn't really help, in fact if I stop at the traffic lights between the motorway and work the temp drops below the bottom of the main section while I'm idoling.

-mods - feel free to move this if you think its in the wrong place -

Sounds like stat could be stuck open, whats the heater like?

Heaters OK, and certainly much better than when the head went last winter (result of the affore mentioned rad and the very cold weather just after Christmas last year - moral of the story, buy your landy a Cmas pressie or it asks for a new head!).

Main reason for asking is coz if it really is taking that long to warm up properly I was thinking about a bit of foil to reduce the effective rad area (as my 15-20min run to work each morning can't be doing it any good when its running cold) but if it is just the gauge then reducing the rad area may be a bad idea.

And before anyone says anything I can't afford to go electric on the fan so it is on when it's on and off when it's off!

I assume it's not likely to be a bad earth from the dial panel.

As my Rev counter is dead yet again the garage have had the altinator off and on and thats running AOK.

That seems normal to me,my 300 tdi has had its viscous fan removed(in boot in case needed)-she will get up to normal temp if driven hard, but drop down to tickover and the temp guage drops back down again-been running 3 yrs fan free.If the cooling system is in good nick,I don't think a tdi will reach normal temp on tick over-the cooling system is just "too overcooled"

So - whats the thoughts on muffing the rad, I've seen it done but never seen sure it does any good or harm:confused:
