Odd TD5 fueling issue. Neighbours 110 stopped one day a few weeks ago and was showing up failed injectors.
Changed the injectors and the fuel pump was dead. New VDO fuel pump and it runs fine most of the time and will tick over on the driveway fine but if drive, after about 3 miles, it'll feel like it's run out for fuel. Will start again with a good bit of cranking.
It seemed like injector washers to me then so I pulled the injectors and washers seemed fine but the seats weren't great so recut the injector seats.
Put it all back together and started and ran fine for an hour or more while I went and had dinner. Then took it for a 10 mile trip and drove it hard to see if anything would show up and still perfect.
Started this morning and seemed like for 1 or 2 cranks, it wasn't getting enough fuel but once started it ran perfect. Again let it run for maybe half an hour and then took it for a drive and seemed fine until about 3 or 4 miles again where it seemed to run out of diesel again. Kept cranking then again and it started and ran fine then again.
His last mechanic has been messing with it before has done some bodging in messing with fuel pumps. It's had two fuel pumps before by him and pretty rough given the hacking he done to the rear tub floor to make an access hole.
He's also wired the fuel pump direct off the ignition as it doesn't pass through the relays so ecus priming and purge sequence doesn't work so have to do it manually flicking on and off the key if needed
Just checked the fuel filter housing and he's also taken out all the air bleed and check valves
Going to have to wire it properly as even if it isn't the issue, having the fuel pump direct to the key is down right dangerous especially if the cut off switch didn't kill power to it in the event of a crash.
Wondering then would the missing check and bleed valves cause it to loose fuel pressure a little over time? Have taken out bleed valves before myself on them to check if causing a poor start problem but didn't have an issue with running them for a period without them.
Or could it just be the washers and injector seats just sill aren't sealing properly :/
