Had this problem for about 6 months now. When the engine is picking up revs quickly i.e accelerating in 1st,2nd & 3rd gears the ancillary belt squeels.I've now changed the belt, tensioner, ace pump,alternator/vacuum pump, and power steering pump trying to fix the problem as well as using belt dressing but i'ts no better, havent changed the a/c compressor as it spins freely as does the cooling fan pulley.Cant hear which pulley is slipping as the noise is so loud, vacuum pump does get warm quickly but this is probabily normal(tried disconnecting vacuum pipes but no better).any suggestions?

Gary, I know this problem was a while ago, did you cure it.?
My TD5 has the same problem and have tried belts, WD 40 and new tensioner, to no avail !!
Any help greatly appreciated.

My td5 got a squeal/squeak and it's down to my alternator, dry bearings a mechanic mate reckons.

This sounds very similar to a known problem with Tdi 300, same symptoms, same attempts at remedy, but with the 300 the problem is resolved rather bizarely by putting a 1 penny piece unde the tensioner at 9:00.

Don't know if this would apply with Td5, but it's costs nothing to try.

If you need more info please just ask - yes I know, it sounds daft, but it works, honestly.

hi,
sorry for the late reply, havent been on the forum for a while.
my problem turned out to be the exhaust manifold distorted.the exhaust gas was leaking past the gasket causing the squealing noise, it sounded just like a slipping belt !
i had to fit a re-machined manifold and replace 3 broken studs, its been ok eversince.

Hi,

Was this an expensive repair?, are the studs easy to replace?, as I seem to have exactly the same problem with my 2004 G4 Discovery.

a 1 penny piece under the tensioner at 9:00??

Bloody hell, can we make it 10:45? I don't get up til 9:00 and I have to get a shower and have a typical English breakfast (coffee and a smoke)!!!:D

I have this problem, Having trouble narrowing it down without replacing every gasket, Going to have to live with it for now.

Take the auxiliary belt off and feel each pulley in turn for any play/noise. Run the engine on tick-over without the belt on and see if the noise disappears?

It only does it under full load not on tickover or revving in neutral, I cant tell if its a boost leak or a belt, its a high pitched shreek at 1500k and over.

That sounds more turbo related - check the turbo rubber pipes for splits and check the exhaust manifold for leaks.

Yep, same problem on mine. Broken stud on the exhaust manifold. Somebody on here described it as sounding like a dentists drill. On a cold running engine, sprayed around the manifold with WD40 and you could see the bubbles.
Only broke one extra stud getting the manifold off so had 2 to drill out and re-tap.
Absolute bliss when that bloody screech goes away.

Dont say that, I dread taking it all apart,, yeh dentist drill, i got one for a td5.

Broken exhaust stud on cylinder #1 top left stud... Black soot all round it and on the inside of the heat sheild.. I am not going to take it to bits and seeing as i have never drilled or tapped anything, let alone a head, a td5 head at that, im going to leave it.. seeing as its a small blow, Whats peoples opinions on throwing a load of fireputty round the manifold, I dont have the money to get it done proffesionally either.. thanks.
