Boris, my 1963 series 11a 109 Safari with just 37000 from new has a problem. I have replaced the master cylinder, new shoes and springs, new wheel cylinders. Eveything went back as it came off, Boris passed the mot and the tester said the brakes were very good, however, after a couple of miles they bind badly, the old engine struggles to keep going, hubs you could fry an egg on, but cold no problem. Looking at the arrangement, it seems to me that the springs should be closer to the cylinder end of the shoe, but they are not, they are up near the pivot end. I only have the Haynes manual and it does not have a very clear picture of the shoe arrangement. Can anyone help?

Theres some pictures of brakes on series section of another well known land rover forum. just search around for answer to my post from a gent from S.Africa. Very helpful.
